Research shows that virtual reality (VR) meditation can ease stress and lower anxiety. The technology is now available, free of charge, to patients at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute.
A brand new service of Inova Medical Spa, VR meditation transports patients to a location of their choice – from a sunny tropical beach to a peaceful forest to a scenic, snowy tundra. Patients wear a VR headset called the Oculus Go. Using a hand-held digital wand, they can access any of 27 different meditations, ranging from one to five minutes.
The fully immersive experience provides both sights and sounds to help patients relax. Some use it to reduce stress levels before chemotherapy treatment or surgery, while others find it helps to bring the mind back into balance after infusion or radiation therapy.
The service is free and no appointment is necessary. To learn more, visit Inova Medical Spa at Schar Cancer Institute (8081 Innovation Park Drive, 2nd Floor) Monday thru Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. or call 571.472.0750.
