(March 6, 2012) – Inova’s new pediatric critical care transport ambulance will provide intensive care for sick babies and children in a mobile setting. The only vehicle of its kind in our region, the ambulance began specialty pediatric transports last month, based at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children.
The four-door ambulance features specialized care capabilities, including an on-board lab, large amounts of oxygen and medical air, and a generator. A nurse, paramedic and respiratory therapist accompany the EMT driver on transports runs. The vehicle’s large size (31 feet long, 8 feet wide and 11 feet tall) accommodates two children or a mother and child with complex medical conditions. Parents can ride along with their children as well.
The ambulance covers a 600 mile radius to transfer patients from physicians’ offices and other hospitals to the Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children. The Physicians Transport Service and the Auxiliary of Inova Fairfax Hospital teamed up to purchase the state-of-the-art ambulance to serve the region’s pediatric patient population.
