White House Highlights Healthier Hospitals Initiative’s Success in Reducing Environmental Impact and Costs
July 27th, 2012
Senior Administration Officials, Leading Hospital Administrators and Policy Experts Gather to Discuss the Economic and Environmental Benefits of Greening Hospitals
Fairfax, Virginia— The White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) will today facilitate discussions among leaders in health care and policy to highlight the Healthier Hospitals Initiative’s (HHI) successful efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of hospitals, lower costs and improve patient health by incorporating sustainability initiatives into their business models.
As research increasingly links environmental factors with chronic disease Inova joined the Initiative to adopt sustainability efforts that will promote health and well-being for patients, hospital staff and members of the community. “”Engagement is the currency of culture change,” said J. Knox Singleton, CEO, Inova Health System.
Over ten leaders of the health and environmental sectors will take part in two panel discussions: “Fostering a Culture of Environmental Sustainability” and “Healthier Hospitals Initiative: Transforming the Supply Chain.” As part of these discussions, officials will address the impact these efforts have on hospital purchasing decisions, the health care supply chain and the overall business of the health care sector.
Senior Administration officials from the Environmental Protection Agency, the White House Council on Environmental Quality, and the Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Challenge will be in attendance. Additionally, several of the nation’s largest health systems will participate in the discussions, illustrating the widely recognized benefits of implementing smarter business practices across and beyond the health industry. The major health systems and distinguished speakers include:
• J. Knox Singleton, CEO, Inova Health System
• Seema Wadhwa, Director, Healthier Hospitals Initiative
• Gary Cohen, President, Health Care Without Harm, and Founder of the Healthier Hospitals Initiative
• Kathy Gerwig, Vice President, Workplace Safety and Environmental Stewardship Officer, Kaiser Permanente
• Al Iannuzzi, Senior Director Product Stewardship, Worldwide Environment, Health and Safety at Johnson & Johnson
• John Messervy, AIA, Director of Capital and Facility Planning, Partners HealthCare
• Brad Perkins, MD, Executive Vice President for Strategy & Innovation, & Chief Transformation Officer, Vanguard Health Systems
• Blair Sadler, Senior Fellow, Institute for Healthcare Improvement; former CEO of Rady Children’s Hospital
• Jeff Thompson, MD, CEO, Gundersen Health System
• Christina Vernon, Executive Sustainability Officer, Cleveland Clinic
“By implementing the challenges put forth by the Healthier Hospitals Initiative, enrolled hospitals are working to improve the environment, the health of our patients and to lower costs,” said Gary Cohen, president of Health Care Without Harm and founder of HHI. “The Initiative is leading the health care sector in reducing bottom-line costs. In addition, HHI is working to transform the industry as a whole by encouraging all hospitals to purchase more environmentally-preferable supplies, serve healthier foods, use less energy, reduce waste and more.”
HHI is an industry-led initiative that calls upon the nation’s hospitals to commit to the three-year Initiative to improve the health and safety of patients, staff and communities by implementing at least one of the six challenges:
• Engaged Leadership Challenge: engage in leadership on environmental health and sustainability
• Healthier Food Challenge: serve healthier foods and beverages
• Leaner Energy Challenge: reduce energy use
• Less Waste Challenge: reduce waste and recycle
• Safer Chemicals Challenge: use safer chemicals
• Smarter Purchasing Challenge: purchase environmentally preferable products

Inova Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center Receives National Award for Achievements in Quality Care
July 19th, 2012
Award honors best practices in skilled nursing and post-acute care facilities
(Leesburg, VA) – The American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) are pleased to announce the selection of Inova Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center as a 2012 recipient of the Silver – Achievement in Quality for its outstanding performance in the health care profession. The competitive award highlights select facilities across the nation that serve as models of excellence in providing high-quality long term care.
“This award is a benchmark of distinction in the journey to providing high quality care,” said Governor Mark Parkinson, President and CEO of AHCA/NCAL. “The long term and post-acute care community applauds Inova Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on this great achievement.”
In an indication of a strengthening commitment to quality care in skilled nursing and post-acute care centers, the AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Program saw success rates of applicants for the Silver award double from 8 percent to 17 percent. Inova Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center was one of 52 facilities nationwide to receive the Silver-level award this year.
Implemented by AHCA/NCAL in 1996, the National Quality Award Program is centered on the criteria of the Baldrige Performance Excellence Program. The program assists providers of long term and post-acute care services in achieving their performance excellence goals.
The program has three levels: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Facilities begin the quality improvement process at the Bronze level and must receive an award at each level before proceeding to the next. As a recipient of the Silver – Achievement in Quality award, Inova Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has demonstrated systematic advancements in quality, plans for continual improvement, and sustainable organizational goals. Inova Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center may now move forward in developing approaches and achieving performance levels that meet the criteria required for the Gold – Excellence in Quality award, which requires them to address the Baldrige Health Care Criteria for Performance Excellence in its entirety.
“Receiving this award is evidence of the staff commitment and successful leadership at Inova Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and its ability to apply rigorous standards to operations and service,” says Chick Stepahin, Chair, AHCA/NCAL National Quality Award Board of Overseers. “Inova Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center has been consistent in its performance and dedication to providing high-quality care.”
The awards are sponsored by AHCA/NCAL Associate Business Member My InnerView, a Web-based applied research and quality-management company that supports leaders across the entire assisted living, senior housing and skilled nursing profession with tools to measure, benchmark and improve performance. The award will be presented to Inova Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center during AHCA/NCAL’s 63rd Annual Convention and Exposition, October 7-10, 2012 in Tampa, FL.

All Inova Hospitals Rank in top 20
FALLS CHURCH, VA – U.S. News & World Report today released its annual Best Hospitals rankings, citing Inova Fairfax Hospital as the top Washington, DC Metro hospital. All of Inova Health System’s five hospitals advanced to the top 20 with 4 in the top ten. This year’s Best Hospitals, the 23rd annual edition, showcases more than 720 of the nation’s roughly 5,000 hospitals. Fewer than 150 are nationally ranked in at least one of 16 medical specialties. The rest of the recognized hospitals met a standard of performance nearly as demanding in one or more specialties.
“Inova is reinventing healthcare, increasing value for our patients,” observed Knox Singleton, CEO of Inova Health System. “Our care model emphasizes collaboration between physician, patient and family underscoring wellness, education, research and care management as part of our commitment to improving the health of the community we serve.”
The hospital rankings, said U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow, are like a GPS-type aid to help steer patients to hospitals with strong skills in the procedures and medical conditions that present the biggest challenges. “All of these hospitals are the kinds of medical centers that should be on your list when you need the best care,” said Comarow. “They are where other hospitals send the toughest cases.”
The rankings were published by U.S. News in collaboration with RTI International, a research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Highlights of the 2012-13 rankings will appear in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2013 guidebook, to go on sale in August.

James Ecklund, MD: A Neurosurgeon’s “Can-Do” Attitude
July 9th, 2012
An interview with traumatic brain injury expert James Ecklund, MD by Michelle Rabell
When congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in 2011, Inova’s neurosurgeon James Ecklund was one of the two military-trained brain injury experts called to Arizona to consult on the case within 24 hours of the injury.
We spoke with Dr. Ecklund to learn more about his specialty.
Why did you choose neurosurgery over another specialty?
In medical school, I first thought I wanted to be a trauma surgeon because that’s what I saw in the news and watching Dr. Joe Gannon on TV (1970’s television drama, Medical Center) because it seemed exciting.
Then as a medical student at Walter Reed, I met a first year neurosurgery resident at a pizza party. He was a West Point grad like myself, and mentioned he was on call all night every third night, working over 100 hours per week.
Then he said “I figure that anything I do, in order to be successful in life, whether it be medicine, law or starting my own business, I’m going to be busting my butt. So I’m busting my butt now; I’m making a difference,- and I like what I do.”
And I thought that’s the attitude I want. That’s a guy I can relate to. He’s a good friend to this day.
So, you wanted a challenge…
I’ve come to see that a common attitude among neurosurgeons is the “can-do”, “nothing’s too hard” attitude.
Frankly, the brain was kind of an unknown. Even other physicians were afraid of it because it’s the unforgiving beast; if you mess up, it’s permanent.
Is there one area (sub-specialty) of neurosurgery that you prefer?
I’ve really trained in everything. When I was chairman of neurosurgery at Walter Reid, if we didn’t have a pediatric surgeon, I’d do most of the pediatrics; if we didn’t have a vascular surgeon, I’d do most of the vascular and aneurysms.
I always had a love and interest in Spine and taught an international spine and peripheral nerve course for over ten years.
My research and my main interest, though, is military-relevant neurosurgery. At Walter Reed, that was a niche that wasn’t well represented.
I focus on penetrating brain injury, and recently I’ve been focusing on blast and ballistic injury to the brain. That is why when Congresswoman Giffords was shot, I was asked to consult on her case.
What are some common cases that are not related to the military for which a patient would need a neurosurgeon?
The most common cases – making up about 80% of neurosurgical cases around the country – is spine disease. This includes herniated disks, fusions, trauma or spine tumors.
Neurosurgery is a very broad specialty. We also take on vascular cases, aneurysms, AVM’s (arteriovenous malformation), brain tumors, pituitary tumors and peripheral nerve damage. We operate and cure people with epilepsy; we put stimulators in for pain, movement disorders and Parkinson’s disease.
We operate on the brain and the spinal cord. We enter through the head, from the neck to the spine, or from the chest and thoracic spine, back or the abdomen to get to the spine, and operate throughout all extremities on the peripheral nerves.
We really operate on the entire body.
If a patient came in with a herniated disk, for instance, how would they get to be seen by you or another neurosurgeon?
You or your family doctor can refer any spine patient to the Inova Spine Institute. Our nurse navigators will talk to you and facilitate the right first visit- it might be with a surgeon, or it could be with a physical medicine doctor or even a pain management physician.
James M. Ecklund, MD, is an internationally recognized neurosurgeon and medical director at Inova Neuroscience Institute, who has worked to help wounded soldiers with traumatic brain injuries. He is an educator and researcher, and spent ten years as chairman of neurosurgery at Walter Reed and Bethesda Naval Medical Center, during which time he was deployed to combat support hospitals in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Inova Alexandria Hospital Launches $10 Million Legacy of Life Campaign for bequest and estate giving
July 6th, 2012
Local resident kicks-off campaign with $1.25 Million donation to hospital’s cancer center
Alexandria, VA – Joseph Viar, Alexandria resident and long-time supporter of Inova Alexandria Hospital, announced he will be donating $1.25 million through his estate to the hospital’s cancer center. The center will be named in his honor as the Joseph Viar and Bonnie Christ Cancer Center. Viar’s gift kicks-off the hospital’s new $10 million Legacy of Life campaign.
The gift was announced at an annual event at Viar’s home to recognize and thank donors to the hospital. “Now at the age of 71, my children are grown and my grandchildren are thriving. I am fortunate to enjoy a full life with plenty of fishing adventures and volunteer work, said Joe Viar. “The journey to today leads me to think about the kind of legacy I want to leave behind. After much thought, it came to me that I want to give a future gift to the hospital.” Viar concluded his remarks by urging the assembled hospital supporters to join him in supporting the new Legacy of Life Campaign.
The Legacy of Life Campaign encourages individuals and families to support the hospital through estate and bequest giving. These allocations are a way to plan future donations for the hospital. At the same time the donor, during his lifetime, receives recognition for the intended gift, as well as the ability to direct the gift to a particular medical department of primary interest to the donor. Knowing that the gift is in place for the future, the hospital can anticipate long-term funding potential.
“We are so pleased that Joe chose Inova Alexandria Hospital’s Cancer Center as the place to honor his name and legacy as an humanitarian,” said Christine Candio, CEO, Inova Alexandria Hospital. “Estate giving is an essential part of our fundraising. At the conclusion of Project 2010, our recent expansion initiative, we found that more than 15% of the $25 million raised came from thoughtful individuals who had made bequest intentions sometimes 15 or 20 years ago.”
If you would like to learn more about the Legacy of Life Campaign, please contact Mary Myers, Executive Director, Inova Alexandria Hospital Foundation at 703-504-7700.
To schedule an interview with Christine Candio or Joe Viar please call Allison Kenty at 703-504-3840.
