Inova Issues 2020 Community Report Highlighting Contributions to Health Equity, Patient Access and Excellence in Care

FALLS CHURCH, VA– Inova Health System issued its annual Community Report for 2020, highlighting its $334 million investment in the Northern Virginia community while enhancing excellence in patient care, commitment to team member well-being, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

In 2020, Inova’s robust community investment included its commitment to charity care, research, education, and other programs benefiting patients and the region.  The health system focused on addressing the most pressing needs of the community including health equity, access to care and social determinants of health and implemented programs and strategies to address these community needs.

“Whether it is delivering world-class clinical outcomes, ensuring a smooth patient experience, or delivering compassionate care to every patient we serve, excellence is our goal,” said J. Stephen Jones, MD, President and CEO, Inova Health System. “We have a responsibility to our communities – regardless of their status, background, or ability to pay – to tirelessly pursue the health outcomes that ensure they can thrive. Our 2020 Community Report illustrates how we’re achieving this goal.”

The healthcare inequities experienced by many in the Northern Virginia community were even more glaring in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Inova found that patients were delaying important care as fear of COVID-19 compounded access challenges. In response, Inova rapidly expanded its telemedicine capabilities, providing more than 175,000 primary care, behavioral health, and chronic disease virtual visits, along with nearly 10,000 in-person medical house calls to homebound seniors, ensuring all in our community had access to world-class Inova care while staying at home.

Moreover, Inova expanded access to services for under-resourced and at-risk communities, including nearly 22,000 primary care visits for the uninsured and underinsured at Inova Cares Clinics for Families. Inova’s Forensic Assessment and Consultation Team (FACT) treated nearly 900 survivors of sexual and domestic violence, leading the region in providing this critical service. Finally, Inova provided $125,000 in grants to partner community organizations, elevating those whose mission aligns with Inova’s community health priorities.

Inova and its team members continued to provide world-class healthcare amid a global pandemic in 2020, leading the region in COVID-19 vaccinations with more than 450,000 doses of the vaccine administered to teachers, healthcare workers and members of our community. As Northern Virginia’s largest nonprofit healthcare provider, the key community programs and investments outlined in the 2020 Community Report are core to Inova’s mission, and even more critical alongside the continued regional COVID-19 response.
