World Sickle Cell Day is on Wednesday, June 19th. Sickle Cell Disease affects more than 700,000 people in the United States. Their red blood cells are shaped like sickles instead of normal biconcave, disc-shaped red cells. Normal shaped red cells travel through veins of people easily, whereas the abnormally shaped “sickle” cells may block blood vessels, especially during an illness. A person diagnosed with sickle cell disease experiences body pain when they get sick.
To help with healing, some sickle cell patients undergo “red blood cell exchanges” in which they receive donated blood, sometimes up to eight to ten units per procedure, approximately six times per year.
Greg Stroman, Cornerback for the Washington Redskins will be donating with his family on June 19th at the Dulles Donor Center in Sterling, VA to help bring awareness to Sickle Cell Disease and help ensure blood products are available for Sickle Cell Patients when they need transfusions for healing.
Inova Blood Donor Services is the Official Blood Collection Agency of the Washington Redskins.
