Renowned Cardiologist Dr. Paul Gurbel Joins Inova Heart and Vascular Institute

FALLS CHURCH, VA – October 26, 2015 – Paul A. Gurbel, MD, world-renowned interventional cardiologist and researcher, is joining Inova Heart and Vascular Institute (IHVI), located on the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, as the Director of Interventional Cardiology and Cardiovascular Medicine Research. He has already begun working for IHVI part time, and joins full time on November 1.

Dr. Gurbel comes to Inova from Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, where he served as the Director of Cardiovascular Research and the Director of the Sinai Center for Thrombosis Research, which he founded in 1997. He is also a Professor of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine.

Dr. Gurbel joins recent IHVI recruit Charles Murphy, MD, from Duke University, who serves as the chief safety officer and cardiovascular intensivist, as Inova moves to transform its cardiovascular leadership.

Dr. Gurbel’s research focuses on the effects and development of antiplatelet agents. His laboratory pioneered the concept of antiplatelet response variability, and his research and observations led to the development of new P2Y12 inhibitors. Dr. Gurbel’s lab also instituted personalized antiplatelet therapy based on phenotypic and genetic analyses. He holds patents in the fields of interventional cardiology and antithrombotic therapy.

Inova and Sinai Hospital have agreed to work together to advance the treatment of congestive heart failure throughout the mid-Atlantic region. Dr. Gurbel will continue to be available to treat patients in Baltimore and Virginia.

Dr. Gurbel earned his medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Duke University Medical Center. He then completed a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care at Johns Hopkins University, followed by fellowships in Cardiovascular Disease and Interventional Cardiology as well as a Chief Residency in internal medicine at Duke. He is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
