Inova Mount Vernon Hospital Earns ‘A’ Grade for Patient Safety in Leapfrog’s fall 2015 Hospital Safety Score

Alexandria VA – October 29, 2015 – Inova Mount Vernon Hospital is pleased to announce it has been awarded a grade of “A” for patient safety by the independent national hospital patient advocacy organization, The Leapfrog Group, This top designation recognizes the hospital’s strong performance and superior outcomes in patient safety-related areas, including prevention of errors, injuries, accidents and infections.

An “A” Hospital Safety Score represents the gold standard for patient safety and is compiled under the guidance of the nation’s leading patient safety experts. The first and only hospital safety rating to be peer-reviewed in the Journal of Patient Safety, the Hospital Safety Score is free to the public and designed to provide consumers information they can use to protect themselves and their families when facing a hospital stay.

Deborah Addo, hospital Chief Executive Officer, says “when it comes to quality and safety at Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, we never grade ourselves on the curve. This strong endorsement by The Leapfrog Group validates the results of our relentless commitment to patient safety. I salute the entire team for working so hard to achieve this recognition.” Addo notes that this announcement marks the hospital’s third consecutive “A” Hospital Safety designation by The Leapfrog Group.

“Inova Mount Vernon Hospital’s “A” grade is a powerful reminder of its commitment to putting patient safety above all else,” says Leah Binder, President and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We are pleased to recognize the persistent efforts of your clinicians and staff to protect your patients. Our families, neighbors, colleagues and friends deserve a hospital that will pull out all the stops to keep them safe.”

Developed under the guidance of Leapfrog’s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel, the Hospital Safety Score uses 28 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to produce a single A, B, C, D, or F score. These scores demark a hospital’s overall capacity to keep patients safe from preventable harm.

The Hospital Safety Score is fully transparent, offering a full analysis of the data and methodology used in determining grades on the website. Patients can also review their hospital’s past safety performance alongside its current grade on the Hospital Safety Score site, allowing them to determine which hospitals have the best track record in patient safety and which have demonstrated consistent improvement.
