Inova Alexandria Hospital Achieves Recognition as a Top Hospital in Women’s Health Services

Alexandria, VA – January 23, 2014 – Inova Alexandria Hospital announced that it has been recognized with 5 stars for both Gynecologic Surgery and Maternity Care as measured by Healthgrades, the leading online resource that helps consumers search, evaluate, compare and connect with physician and hospitals.  Inova Alexandria Hospital is also in the top 5% in the nation for the third consecutive year for those hospitals evaluated for maternity care outcomes.

For maternity care, Healthgrades analyzed patient outcome data for virtually every hospital in the 18 states that provide all-payer state data for years 2009 through 2011.  Maternity Care ratings are based on the analysis and equal weighting of the following factors:

  • Maternal complication rate among women undergoing vaginal deliveries
  • Maternal complication rate among women undergoing C-sections
  • Number of newborn deliveries adjusted for low birth weight
  • Newborn risk-adjusted mortality

Gynecologic surgery includes those surgeries that treat benign tumors, cancer, infertility, incontinence, and various other conditions.

“We are dedicated to providing the best care for the women in our community and are proud of this recognition for our excellence in maternity and GYN surgery,” said Christine Candio, CEO, Inova Alexandria Hospital, “Women can have confidence when selecting Inova Alexandria Hospital based on this recognition coupled with our long history of delivering excellent care.”

This year, Inova Alexandria Hospital embarked on Women’s Tower Renovation Project. When completed in 2014, the tower will feature four floors dedicated to providing a comfortable, inviting, healing environment with state-of-the-art medical technology for the best possible pre- and post-birthing experience, as well as post-breast and gynecological surgeries.

The hospital was also recently selected to participate in Best Fed Beginnings, a first-of-its-kind national effort to significantly improve breastfeeding rates in states where rates are currently the lowest.  Best Fed Beginnings seeks to reverse these low rates by dramatically increasing the number of US hospitals implementing a proven model for maternity services that better supports a new mother’s choice to breastfeed.
