American College of Surgeons Recognizes Hospital for Delivering High-Quality Cancer Care
Alexandria, VA – (March 17, 2009) — Inova Alexandria Hospital has been named a recipient of the 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC). The hospital was one of just 93 hospitals nationwide to earn the award, with 10 being awarded in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
“This outstanding achievement award acknowledges that Inova Alexandria Hospital has a commitment to excellence and quality care,” said Matthew Poggi, MD, Medical Director, Cancer Center, Inova Alexandria Hospital. “Our physicians and staff go above and beyond the call of duty each day to help patients during one of the most difficult times in their lives.”
More than 450 cancer programs were evaluated for the award by the CoC, which evaluated them in such areas as the delivery of care, clinical services, community outreach, and in “setting the standard” for other cancer programs.
“When we provide cancer care to our patients, we look at what they need and should have to beat their diagnosis, including education, research, outreach and the most current cancer treatments available,” said Winston Ueno, MD, Chairman, Cancer Committee, Inova Alexandria Hospital. “We are extremely proud that the CoC recognized our Cancer Center as an outstanding performer.”
To be considered for the award, cancer centers must provide patients undergoing treatment with access to:
- State-of-the-art services and equipment
- A multi-specialty team approach, to coordinate the best treatment options
- Clinical trial and treatment options
- Cancer-related information, education and support
- A cancer registry and follow-up
- Ongoing monitoring
- Care close to home
The CoC is composed of a group of nationally-recognized cancer organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients. The Outstanding Achievement Award was established in 2004 as a way to recognize cancer programs that provide stellar care to their patients.
Inova Alexandria Hospital joins Inova Loudoun Hospital as a 2008 recipient of the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer Outstanding Achievement Award, and Inova Fairfax Hospital as a 2007 recipient.
