Patrick Christiansen is the Chief Executive Office of Inova Fairfax Medical Campus.
As we close out 2015, I’m proud to look back on a great year for the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus (IFMC), and we have much to look forward to in the coming year.
We continue to build a team of world-renowned physicians, researchers, nurses and healthcare professionals as Inova establishes itself as leader in personalized health.
There are big things on the horizon for Inova Fairfax in 2016. In just a few weeks, we will open the brand-new, expanded Inova Women’s Hospital and Inova Children’s Hospital. Inova Women’s Hospital will have the first and only dedicated women’s hospital in Virginia, D.C. and Maryland. Inova Children’s Hospital offers a world-class Children’s hospital right in the backyard of Northern Virginia residents.
Northern Virginia’s First Women’s Hospital
The new, state-of-the-art Inova Women’s Hospital is the third phase in a multi-year project designed to ensure that the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus remains a world-class destination for patient care, education and research, now and in the future. The mission of the new hospital is to serve women throughout their lives, in every stage of their health care needs.
Within the newly-expanded Inova Women’s Hospital, features include all private patient rooms, including 192 private women’s beds, 33 labor and delivery rooms, six C-section rooms, operating rooms dedicated to women’s surgical procedures, a High Risk Perinatal (HRP) Unit with exclusive private rooms, VIP amenities and family garden space. Family and friends are welcome 24/7, and can stay overnight in comfort in our beautiful new spaces.
All of the acute-care floors are grouped into complementary specialties to improve flow and staff collaboration. The overall design of the building employs evidence-based research that promotes healing, safety and patient comfort, while the “green” elements showcase Inova’s continued commitment to sustainability.
World-class Children’s Hospital
The new Inova Children’s Hospital is Northern Virginia’s only children’s hospital, featuring 116 private pediatric patient rooms, an expanded 108-bassinette level IV neonatal intensive care unit- the most advanced in the entire region, pediatric oncology unit, Northern Virginia’s only pediatric intensive care unit with 26 beds including eight cardiac intensive care unit beds. The new pediatric rehab room offers our patients therapy services that meet child-specific needs.
With a separate child-friendly entrance, the new Inova Children’s Hospital includes a number of features built specifically for patients, developed by feedback from staff, former patients and families. One of our main goals is to offer the latest in state-of-the-art technology while ensuring kids and their families feel safe and comfortable. Three playrooms, a teen room and outdoor play park will allow young patients and their families a safe space away from medical procedures so that they may focus on spending time together as a family. Interactive art, healthcare friendly equipment and modern technology are the perfect combination for a safe, fun environment.
The new Inova Children’s Hospital will also feature dedicated family spaces, where parents and families can make phone calls, check e-mails or work remotely if needed. We have incorporated these features with feedback from our physicians, staff and patient families – all to provide a space that is as functional as it is beautiful.
A Year in Review
The opening of the Inova Women’s and Inova Children’s hospitals builds on the success we’ve seen throughout 2015…
Building a world-class team
The year began with Donald “Skip” Trump, MD joining IFMC as the first CEO and Executive Director of the newly established Inova Dwight and Martha Schar Cancer Institute. Under his leadership, we received a $50 million gift from Dwight and Martha Schar to launch the cancer center, which will anchor the new Inova Center for Personalized Health. Dr. Trump also brought on James Wade, MD, as the Deputy Director for Quality and Network Development; and Thomas Graves recently joined Inova as Vice President for Cancer Services and Associate Director for Administration. This leadership team brings substantial specialized expertise in cancer care and research to offer innovative precision treatments.
In addition, Chris O’Connor, MD, joined us in early 2015 as the new Chief Executive Officer of the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, after 31 years at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. O’Connor was recently joined by word-renowned interventional cardiologist Paul Gurbel, MD. Under their leadership, we look forward to establishing a center of excellence in treating complex coronary artery disease and expanding our thrombosis research.
Most recently, Ann Marie Madden came to Inova Fairfax Medical Campus as our Chief Nursing Officer for our Adult Hospital and Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, including the adult emergency services. Ann Marie is an experienced nurse executive and brings with her more than 35 years in healthcare with an exceptional track record in program development, process improvement and strategic planning. Ann Marie is a great leader for an exceptional nursing team as we drive to continually improve our quality, safety and service performance.
Leading a Major League Medical Team
In the fall, the Inova Sports Medicine Institute Medical Director Robin West, MD was named Lead Team Physician for the Washington Nationals. She will focus on injury prevention and personalized treatment of these premier athletes. Dr. West formerly served as the assistant team physician for the Pittsburgh Steelers where she helped keep the team healthy during three Super Bowl runs. We look forward to her adding a World Series ring to her collection in 2016.
Awards and Accolades
IFMC received many accolades throughout the year for excellent care, including being named the #1 Hospital in the Washington, DC area by U.S. News & World Report for the fourth year in a row. In the spring, Becker’s Hospital Review named Inova Fairfax Hospital among the Top 100 Great Hospitals in the country, and this fall, The Leapfrog Group awarded IFMC with an ‘A’ grade – the top score in patient safety ratings.
This year, I am grateful to the incredibly talented physicians, nurses and staff at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus for making us one of the best hospitals in the country, and for providing the very best of care to patients in our community and beyond. And thank you to our patients for trusting Inova Fairfax with your health-care needs. We look forward to continued quality care, as we enter the future of health together in 2016.
Have a happy and healthy new year!
