Bariatric Surgery Patient Success Story

Weight Loss with Bariatric Surgery: Patient Success Story

This month’s patient, Ms. Shannon Vanoss, is a recent success story. Shannon began her journey just four short months ago. Shannon came to Inova Bariatric surgery because she wanted relief from her chronic joint pain, acid reflux, and difficulty sleeping.

A former Marine, now in a thriving second career, Shannon’s goal was to be able to get back into the activities she used to enjoy. One barrier to that was addressing Shannon’s weight condition.

Shannon, like so many, had tried to lose weight through traditional weight loss methods.  However, on the rave reviews from close friend, who had had surgery with Inova Bariatrics, Shannon attended a seminar with Dr. Hamid Pourshojae.  Like so many who attend, Shannon realized that managing long-term successful weight loss is more complex than simply calories in, calories out. She realized that she would need a surgical tool to help her body re-set its set point back to a healthier level.

Today, just four short months from her first seminar, Shannon has lost 36 pounds and dropped two sizes in her clothes. She is enjoying feeling more alert, active and alive.  Shannon reports that she is sleeping better and is looking forward to starting back into exercising — she may even try for a walk/run event.

Though Shannon’s progress is outstanding, her change has been a process that has been fluid and dynamic. Shannon has found that she is now able to modify some of her mealtime habits. For example:

  • no more skipped meals
  • routine meal patterns
  • spending more time chewing her food well
  • including more conversation
  • more mindful portions

Shannon’s progress will continue as she continues to log her food and exercise and record her weight weekly. Shannon is also fortunate to have a strong support group which has been helpful to her wonderful progress.

For Shannon, there is no going back. She plans to continue moving forward with re-engaging in her hobbies and with friends, and following up with her physician’s recommendations.  Keep up the great work Shannon!

It would have been nice if you had included a pic so that we could see for ourselves the result. Although 36 lbs sounds like a great deal of weight loss; a picture is worth a thousand words.
