Inova Employee Giving Supports Relief Efforts by Global NGO Project HOPE
Falls Church, VA – January 15, 2014 – Inova’s more than 14,000 employees showed their generosity and caring by raising $120,000 to support disaster relief efforts in the Philippines as a result of the devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan.
In the wake of Haiyan that made landfall in the Philippines on Nov. 8, 2013, killing thousands and rendering homeless hundreds of thousands more, Inova employees rallied to raise funds to support Virginia-based Project HOPE’s efforts to provide humanitarian relief.
“I am in awe of the selfless dedication and determination the Inova family puts forth to help people in distress,” said Knox Singleton, CEO at Inova. “Not only do Inova employees give of their talents and experience to improve the lives of those in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area, but they generously reach out to provide aid to those in need thousands of miles away.”
Inova employees quickly raised nearly $70,000 in the days following the disaster. Inova’s administration matched the first $50,000 the employees gave to reach the donation total.
Singleton traveled to Project HOPE’s distribution center in Winchester, VA, to present the funds to HOPE CEO John P. Howe, III, MD. Singleton toured the facility and inspected a shipment of medicines and medical supplies valued at more than $5 million that was being prepared to ship to the Philippines.
“The generous hearts of people like the Inova employees enable our Project HOPE staff and volunteers to do what we do best – deliver aid and long-term humanitarian assistance to those devastated by disease and natural disaster,” said Howe.
Including the $5 million shipment, Project HOPE has shipped more than $7.3 million in relief supplies to the Philippines. In addition, Project HOPE has sent more than 60 volunteer health professionals to Tapaz City on Panay Island and the Camotes Islands in the Philippines to provide care to individuals and families affected by Haiyan.
