Inova Health System Fighting the Flu with a One-Two Punch

Leesburg, VA – (August 24, 2009) – Facing a flu season complicated by the prospect of both seasonal flu and the H1N1 (“swine flu”) viruses, and as one of the largest providers of flu shots in Northern Virginia, Inova Health System is prepared to provide seasonal flu shots in September this year – one month earlier than usual. We offer flu clinics at Inova hospitals, at employer sites and at many other convenient clinic sites throughout Northern Virginia. It’s all part of Inova’s commitment to help keep the communities it serves healthy.

The flu is not just a bad cold. Each year, about 36,000 people in the U.S. die from causes related to seasonal flu, while more than 200,000 people are hospitalized. An annual flu vaccination is safe and convenient, and can be up to 90 percent effective in protecting against this serious illness. Members of the community can protect themselves and their loved ones by getting their vaccines.

Inova Loudoun Hospital Mobile Health Services will offer flu shot clinics beginning in September. The clinics are open to the general public. Children aged 4 and above are eligible to receive a flu shot at our community clinics. At our hospital-based clinics on Sept. 27 and 30, infants aged 6 months to adults can be vaccinated.

Each child will need to be accompanied by a legal guardian or parent. Seniors with a valid Medicare card can also receive a flu shot. The cost for the seasonal flu shot is $25 per person (cash or check accepted). Inova also will offer H1N1 flu shots in accordance with federal government guidelines once the vaccine becomes available.

The Mobile Health Services schedule for September is listed below. For more information about immunizations and other flu-related services offered by Inova, call 703-750-8800 (or call 1-877-895-5BUG, toll-free, if a call to the 703 area code is a long-distance call) or visit inova.org/flu.
