Inova Loudoun Hospital to Open Expanded Pediatric Unit and Inova Pediatric Specialty Center

Loudoun’s Community Hospital Offers State-of-the-Art Children’s Medical Care

Leesburg, VA – (November 13, 2008) — Inova Loudoun Hospital, at 44045 Riverside Parkway in Leesburg, VA, is set to open the doors of its new, state-of-the-art, 11,000 square-foot expanded pediatric unit.  The Pediatric Unit, located on the third floor of the new West Wing, is a 14-inpatient bed unit, doubling the current seven-bed unit. The Inova Pediatric Specialty Center, located in Suite 208 in the Physician Offices I, 44055 Riverside Parkway, directly connected to the main hospital, is also set to open.

“We’re thrilled to be able to offer these pediatric specialty services to the Loudoun Community,” said Randy Kelley, CEO, Inova Loudoun Hospital. “This area is full of families and children, so it’s wonderful to have these children’s services closer to home, rather than families commuting into Fairfax County or even to Washington, DC for their child’s care,” he added.

With a budget of $1.5 million dollars to equip and furnish the 14-bed unit, there are many improvements from the current facility.  The Unit features a new security system called Pedz, the first of its kind in the United States. The Pedz system not only meets the unique security needs of pediatric patients, it also supports a fun, kid-centered environment.  The child has freedom to move around the unit and, by touching a computerized map of the unit, nurses and doctors can locate the child quickly.

Patient rooms range in size from 270 to 400 square feet and have two flat screen TVs with a PlayStation®3, DVD player and pull out couch in each room. There is centralized monitoring, which allows nurses to see patients’ vital signs from the nurses station, a medication room, dinosaur- and turtle-shaped exam tables, IV poles complete with roller skate wheels, a digital aquarium, and a separate parents’ sleeping room. Both the playroom and family lounge overlook the helicopter pad.  Cole’s Closet, a local non-profit, has donated over $17,000 for toys and the digital aquarium.

A Child Life Specialist will also be a new feature. These professionals work one-on-one with patients or siblings to explain procedures at the child’s age level. They will provide procedural preparations and tours, distraction and support during medical procedures, and medical and therapeutic play, in addition to bedside activities.

The Inova Pediatric Specialty Center is a partnership with Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children.
It offers an expanded network of world-class pediatric medicine with expanded specialties  including: infectious diseases, headed up by David P.
