Inova Cancer Services to Hold One-Day Conference for Cancer Survivors

Richard Roundtree, Medical Experts to Discuss Survivorship Issues

Falls Church, VA – (September 15, 2008) —After cancer patients have completed treatment, they are often faced with unanswered questions and unfamiliar feelings. In order to address the medical, psychosocial and financial difficulties associated with surviving cancer, Inova Cancer Services is holding the 3rd Annual Coffelt Cancer Survivorship Conference on Saturday, September 27.

Richard Roundtree, 1970s icon and leading actor in the “Shaft” movies will discuss his battle with breast cancer.

Cancer survivors and their friends and families are invited to learn how to better manage the challenges of survivorship.

Survivors will hear from medical experts about a variety of topics, such as new advances in cancer treatment, advocacy, complementary and alternative therapies, the importance of incorporating humor into life, how to identify employment and insurance issues associated with a cancer diagnosis, and how to manage quality of life issues.  Through song, The Shades of Pink Choir, comprised of breast cancer survivors, will inspire survivors and remember those who lost their battle.

Attendees will also hear from a panel of cancer survivors about their personal journeys and coping techniques.

“We encourage cancer survivors and their families to come out to this event because it’s a unique opportunity for them to meet and speak with other survivors as well as cancer experts,” said Kirsten Edmiston, MD, medical director, Inova Fairfax Hospital Cancer Center.“We want them to know that they don’t have to deal with survivor issues alone.”

Participants must register by Friday, September 19 and the $25 admission fee includes lunch.  However, no one will be turned away for inability to pay.
