Inova Loudoun Hospital Announces Emergency Room Expansion and Level III Trauma Center

Inova Loudoun ER RenderingCommunity Support Catalyzes Advanced Clinical and Trauma Services

Leesburg, VA — September 7, 2016 — Inova Loudoun Hospital, recognized for providing world-class healthcare to meet the needs of our growing community, “broke bricks” to begin the renovation and expansion of its award-winning Lansdowne Campus Emergency Room.  In addition, it was announced that beginning October 1, the hospital is advancing the level of ER care by pursuing implementation of Level III Trauma capabilities. This will be the first trauma center in Loudoun County.

The new facility will be named the Inova Virts Miller Family Emergency and Trauma Center at Inova Loudoun Hospital in recognition of a $2M leadership gift given by lead donors and local business leaders Sharon D. Virts and Scott F. Miller. Philanthropy has made a huge difference with this project. In addition to this $2M contribution, Dr. Edward Puccio and his colleagues at Commonwealth Emergency Physicians and Mike and Teresa Wheeler stepped forward to kick off the ER campaign through donations of $250,000 each to the project. They were joined by other generous community leaders who collectively contributed an additional $500,000 in support. Total projected cost of the project is in excess of $5M.

“Loudoun County is my lifelong home and I have been richly blessed by this community,” said FCi Federal Founder and Chairman Sharon D. Virts. “As the lead donor for Inova Loudoun Hospital’s ER renovation, Scott and I want to ensure that local access to world-class healthcare is available to everyone here in Loudoun, where it is needed and where it belongs…right here in Loudoun. I strongly believe it is the responsibility of every citizen to support the foundational pillars of a thriving community. Available and accessible advanced healthcare is one such pillar. I invite all the citizens of our great county to join us in supporting the health and economic well-being of Loudoun County.”

“We’re thrilled to be expanding on our promise of providing world-class healthcare to our community, and are deeply grateful to the wonderful, inspiring donors who came together to ensure that our ER team has facilities as excellent as the care they provide every day,” said CEO H. Patrick Walters, Inova Loudoun Hospital.

The new state-of-the-art Inova Virts Miller Family Emergency and Trauma Center will support the emergency medicine team and EMS system with a larger, more efficient design, and faster connections to care for patients. Enhancements include:

  • new state-of-the-art trauma room
  • increased treatment area by 25%
  • addition of 8 new all-private treatment rooms for a total of 34 adult treatment rooms
  • addition of a treatment room in the children’s ER for a total of 12 children treatment rooms
  • improved ambulance access
  • bedside registration to convert wait time into diagnostic and treatment time
  • new “fast track” rooms to treat less serious injuries
  • new cardiac emergency rooms
  • better flow and wayfinding for patients
  • children’s triage area
  • state of the art nursing station with improved patient visibility
  • better integration and flow between adult and pediatric ER
  • additional restroom facilities
  • redesigned patient and visitor reception areas
  • enhanced family consultation room and EMS work room
  • additional behavioral health room and upgrading current one

These improvements will allow patients to receive care more quickly and spend less time in the ER.  The project will be completed in the last quarter of 2017.  The construction process will be multi-phased so there won’t be any interruption of care for patients.

To a crowd of local elected officials, business, community and Inova leaders, Lisa Dugan, Chief Nursing Officer, Inova Loudoun Hospital and Interim Chief Nursing Executive for the Inova System, announced that Inova Loudoun Hospital will be pursuing implementation Level III trauma services. “As a Trauma Center we’ll be able to treat more critical and seriously injured patients. We have exceptional emergency trained physicians, nurses and excellent surgeons to deliver this level of care. As an advanced community hospital, Inova Loudoun is committed to providing the highest level of care of our community.  This will have a tremendous impact on the level of clinical services available for Loudoun County residents.”

This is the latest component of the hospital’s Master Plan, an expansion of the main campus at 44045 Riverside Parkway, Lansdowne. The Plan extends through 2020 and beyond.
