Ben SolomanFALLS CHURCH, VA (September 30, 2013) – Ben Solomon, MD, an accomplished scientist and medical geneticist has joined the the Inova Translational Medicine Institute (ITMI). Dr. Solomon will lead a new division of Medical Genomics being formed within the ITMI. The division includes a team of genetic counselors providing direct patient care. The new division within ITMI is designed to provide physicians and their patients the best application of genomic testing to the management of specific diseases.

Dr. Solomon will work closely with John E. Niederhuber, MD, CEO of ITMI and Joseph Vockley, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer and Chief Operating Officer of ITMI. Through a number of clinical research projects involving newborns and their parents, ITMI is working to determine the broad implications of genomics to healthcare, including the application of high-throughput whole genome sequencing and related technologies to help identify disease risk for patients and improve health outcomes.

“Dr. Solomon’s extensive clinical genetics training and clinical research experience at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) coupled with the large scale genomic family studies ongoing at ITMI make this recruitment a very important next step in the development of ITMI,” says Dr. John Niederhuber. “Dr. Solomon has the ability to serve as both a much needed clinical consultant for our Inova physicians and their patients as well as an experienced genomics scientist contributing to the analysis of our research studies.”

Dr. Ben Solomon graduated in 2005 as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honors society at Dartmouth Medical School. He completed his residency and fellowship training in Pediatric Medicine and Clinical Genetics at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) at the NIH and at the Children’s National Medical Center.

After completing his training and dual board certification in Pediatrics and Clinical Genetics, he continued at the NIH, researching the genetic and genomic causes of both rare and common conditions, and studying how understanding the molecular underpinnings of human diseases could be translated to more general healthcare situations.  His research has also focused on establishing novel tools in order to enable more efficient and accurate analysis of genomic information.  His approach in achieving these goals involves performing comprehensive clinical studies in concert with detailed genetic and genomic analyses, including the use of large scale sequencing and the exploration of functional consequences.

“Dr. Solomon is an experienced clinical geneticist and pediatric specialist in fetal and perinatal development,” noted Dr. Joseph Vockley.  “He will be a valuable contributor to our analysis of our preterm birth study and our childhood longitudinal cohort study.”

Dr. Solomon is the author of over 70 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, serves as an editor on several medical journals, has edited several medical textbooks, and is actively involved in formal genetic/genomic training, mentorship, and education.
