Inova Alexandria Hospital Named a Community Value Star Hospital by Cleverley + Associates
September 21st, 2011
Fairfax, VA — Inova Alexandria Hospital was recently recognized as a top-ranked Community Value Provider by Cleverley + Associates (Columbus, OH). Cleverley + Associates, a leading healthcare financial consulting firm specializing in operational benchmarking and performance enhancement strategies, released the findings as part of its new publication: State of the Hospital Industry – 2011 Edition.
“Given our dedication to and recognition of the highest standards of quality clinical and compassionate care, we are gratified that our work in relation to management, productivity and financial responsibility has been recognized,” commented Christine Candio, SVP of Inova Health System and CEO of Inova Alexandria Hospital. “Taken as a whole, when properly addressed these core elements help ensure that our overarching goal to assure maximized value in the services we provide by delivering high quality, safe care and an exceptional patient experience while maintaining affordability for the Alexandria community is achieved.”
Written by William O. Cleverley, Ph.D., a noted expert in healthcare finance, State of the Hospital Industry reports selected measures of hospital financial performance and discusses the critical factors that lie behind them. The publication focuses on the US acute-care hospital industry over a three-year time period (2007-2009).
For the eighth year, the 2011 State of the Hospital Industry reports an exclusive measure developed by Cleverley + Associates: the Community Value Index® (CVI). The CVI is a proprietary index created to offer a measure of the value that a hospital provides to its community. The book outlines the data used to calculate the CVI as well as provides a list of the Top 100 and all Five-Star (top quintile) hospitals.
“The topic of hospital value is increasingly being discussed. Issues of pricing and community benefit have been well-publicized but little has been offered to measure the broad scope of value,” adds James Cleverley, co-author. “In response, the Community Value Index® was created to provide an assessment of a hospital’s performance in four areas: financial strength and reinvestment, cost of care, pricing, and quality. Fundamentally, the CVI suggests that a hospital provides value to the community when it is financially viable, is appropriately reinvesting back into the facility, maintains a low cost structure, has reasonable charges, and provides high quality care to patients.”

Inova Loudoun Hospital Launches Mobile Hope

Reaching Out to Homeless Youth in Loudoun County
Leesburg, VA — Inova Loudoun Hospital is launching a new program, Mobile Hope. This new program was recently developed by Inova Loudoun Hospital’s Mobile Health Unit to support the needs of homeless children in Loudoun County.
As one of the richest counties in the country, it is easy to assume Loudoun does not have homeless youth. Yet recently over 650 young students were identified by Loudoun County Public Schools as homeless or precariously housed. Nearly 40 percent of these young people do not have a guardian or parent in their lives. They sleep in cars, in the woods, in abandoned warehouses or “couch surf” among their friends.
More frightening, there likely are many more homeless children living in Loudoun County – as many as hundreds – who have not yet been identified.
Inova Loudoun Hospital’s Mobile Health Services recently became aware of this harsh reality and is quickly establishing partnerships with the Loudoun County Public Schools, churches, police, government officials, health officials and community leaders to create ways for these children to receive essentials including:
- Food
- Clothes
- Blankets
- Hygiene products
- School supplies
- Medical care
The youth that are being helped don’t need to worry because:
- Being homeless is not illegal and nothing to be ashamed of.
- Being homeless is not always a Child Protective Services call.
- Students can get free breakfast and lunch.
- Students can get free transportation to and from school.
- Students will not be transferred from their current school.
- Confidentiality will be met, unless staff feels that the individual is in danger or being abused.
“Inova Loudoun Hospital is committed to successfully partnering with others to meet the basic needs of homeless children in our community. Our hope is that we’ll make a difference in their lives,” said Donna Fortier, community affairs executive & director of Mobile Health Services.
The Inova Mobile Health Unit has been providing health care services in the county for over 10 years, traveling throughout Loudoun providing services to a number of clients from large corporations to those in need. This Mobile Health Unit is one solution to delivering needed items to these children. Inova is especially concerned with providing preventative care to this population, including vaccines, general physicals and other screenings.
