Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children Reports Continued Excellence in Pediatric Cardiovascular Program

July 28th, 2010

Quality Demonstrated by Low Mortality Rate, Unique Programs and New Measures That Get Patients Home Sooner

Falls Church, VA – Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children is proud to release its 2009 Pediatric Cardiac Outcomes Report, which demonstrates the program’s excellence, continued growth and dedication toward building the most advanced program in the region.

In 2009, Inova surgeons performed 278 pediatric and 42 adult congenital surgeries with a 1.1 percent mortality rate (30 days from surgery). This rate is below the expected mortality rate of 1.3 percent. Inova credits the low rate to the quality of surgery and care provided post-operatively.

The surgical team has the ability to treat the most acute heart conditions soon after birth and in the tiniest of babies. In 2009, babies requiring heart surgery weighed an average of seven pounds, the smallest baby weighed less than 5 pounds.

Several unique programs contribute to the overall quality of the pediatric cardiac program and include the following:

  • Cardiac Feeding Team: A team consisting of two cardiac nurses, a registered dietician and a speech language pathologist, that addresses feeding issues in children after surgery. Since the team’s inception, the average length of stay for these patients has decreased by eight days.
  • Center for Coordinated Fetal Care: The Center helps pregnant women whose unborn children have been diagnosed with a congenital heart defect. A patient navigator helps families through every step of the process, from the initial diagnosis and the birth of the baby, to the surgery and arrival home.
  • Adult Congenital Heart Clinic: With improved survival of children with congenital heart defects, it is critical to care for these children through adulthood. Patients receive the expertise of both pediatric specialists at Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children and adult cardiologists at the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute.

In 2010, the hospital has continued to advance its pediatric cardiovascular program. This year a team of cardiologists and cardiac surgeons successfully performed two hybrid Norwood procedures in one day on newborns. This procedure uses the most advanced techniques and is done by just a handful of hospitals across the country. To read the 2009 report, including families’ stories in their own words, click here.

Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children is a 186-bed full-service children’s hospital devoted to the healthcare of infants, children and adolescents. Inova Fairfax Hospital Physician Testifies Before Senate Subcommittee for Cancer Research Funding

July 23rd, 2010

Dr. John Elkas Pushes for Additional Funding for Ovarian Cancer Research Program

Falls Church, VA – John C. Elkas, MD, gynecologic oncologist, Inova Fairfax Hospital, has gone to Washington to push for funding for ovarian cancer research. On June 23, Dr. Elkas presented testimony in front of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee for Defense regarding the 2011 fiscal year funding for the ovarian cancer research program (OCRP) at the Department of Defense.

“We, the members of the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, along with our patients who are battling ovarian cancer every day, depend on the DoD OCRP research funding,” said Dr. Elkas. “It is through this type of research funding that a screening and early detection method for ovarian cancer can be identified which will allow us to save many of the 15,000 lives that are lost to this disease each year.”

In attendance at the hearing were Chairman Daniel Inouye (D-HI) and Ranking Member Thad Cochran (R-MS). Dr. Elkas shared with the Subcommittee the impact that he has seen of research from the DoD OCRP on women and their families. He referenced some of the research that has been funded by the OCRP and how it is important to the discovery of an early detection method for ovarian cancer. He also talked about how the program is under funded and over subscribed, with a pay line of less than 10 percent.

Senator Inouye shared with Dr. Elkas that his wife had died of liver cancer and that he was personally committed to working on the funding levels for these DoD cancer research programs. Dr. Elkas was joined at the hearing by the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance (OCNA) in requesting that the Subcommittee provide $30 million in funding in FY 2011 for the OCRP program.

Inova Health System Again Among ‘Most Wired’ Hospitals, Health Systems

July 18th, 2010

Survey Finds Hospitals with IT Commitment Have Better Outcomes

Falls Church, VA – Inova Health System has again been named one of the nation’s “Most Wired” hospitals and health systems, according to the results of the 2010 Most Wired Survey, released in the July issue of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine.

According to the 2010 study, the 100 Most Wired hospitals show better outcomes in patient satisfaction, risk-adjusted mortality rates and other key quality measures, because of the use of information technology (IT). Marking its 12th year, the goal of the Most Wired Survey continues to be benchmarking hospital progress with information technology.

“We’re excited to have been selected once again as one of the Most Wired Health Systems in the country,” said Geoff Brown, SVP, chief information officer, Inova Health System. “As part of our commitment to provide superior healthcare throughout the System, we work to integrate technology in every way possible to not only improve the patient experience, but also help share critical information among our hospitals and physicians, to ensure that each patient gets the best and safest care.”

The Most Wired Survey is conducted annually by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine, the journal of the American Hospital Association, which uses the results to name the Most Wired hospitals and health systems. It focuses on how the nation’s hospitals use information technologies for quality, customer service, public health and safety, business processes and workforce issues. Inova Health System has been a recipient of this recognition seven out of the last 12 years, reflecting the organization’s commitment to a sustained culture of innovation and to technology solutions designed to improve patient care.

Hospitals & Health Networks conducted the 2010 survey in cooperation with McKesson Corporation and the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives.  The H&HN cover story detailing results is available at www.hhnmag.com.

Inova Fairfax Hospital Ranked Among the Nation’s Best by U.S. News & World Report

July 15th, 2010

Hospital Ranked Among Top 25 in Gynecology

Falls Church, VA – Inova Fairfax Hospital has again been selected by U.S. News & World Report as one of “America’s Best Hospitals.” The hospital was ranked 24th for gynecology, the seventh straight year the hospital has made the list in that specialty.

“During the past 50 years, Inova Fairfax Hospital has created a women’s program that offers a full spectrum of services, from delivering newborns to performing the most advanced surgical procedures,” said L. Reuven Pasternak, MD, CEO, Inova Fairfax Hospital Campus. “This ranking solidifies Inova’s place as a leader in women’s care and we’re proud to offer this level of quality care to our community.”

“Being ranked among the best in the country is a testament to the care and dedication of our doctors, nurses and staff,” said Patricia Schmehl, Administrator, Women’s Services, Inova Fairfax Hospital. “We’ve worked hard to build a program that provides the very best care for women and their families. Whether our patients are facing a serious gynecologic illness or experiencing the joy of a new baby, we’re here to provide help every step of the way.”

U.S. News & World Report uses rigorous standards in compiling its list of the nation’s best hospitals. Hospitals are ranked by specialty and not by specific procedures. Of the 4,852 hospitals evaluated, only 152 scored high enough to be ranked in at least one specialty.

In 12 of the 16 specialties, U.S. News ranked hospitals on hard data, including death rates, procedure volume, patient safety, and balance of nurses and patients. Hospitals must have seen a specified minimum number of Medicare inpatients from 2006 to 2008 who had certain procedures and conditions in a specialty. Or, a hospital could be recommended by physicians in recent U.S. News reputation surveys.

This is the 14th time in the past 15 years that Inova Fairfax Hospital has been ranked among the nation’s best hospitals. The 2010 edition of U.S. News & World Report‘s “America’s Best Hospitals” will be available on newsstands Tuesday, July 27.

Inova Alexandria and Inova Fairfax Hospitals Named ‘Best Workplaces for Commuters’

July 1st, 2010

Hospitals Recognized for Providing Outstanding Commuter Benefits

Falls Church, VA – Inova Alexandria and Inova Fairfax hospitals have been named “Best Workplaces for Commuters” by the National Center for Transit Research. To be honored with this elite designation, the hospitals had to meet a rigorous list of outstanding commuter benefits for employees, such as free or low cost bus passes and vanpool fares and strong telework programs. The hospitals also had to maintain a focus of helping get employees to work safely, on time, and free of commute-related stress.

Working with employees to provide a better commute is part of Inova Health System’s overall sustainability vision. The core strategy being a “triple bottom line” approach: constantly working towards incorporating environmental sustainability into core business operations while working at the intersection of the environment, the economy and society as a whole.

The National Center for Transit Research is part of the University of South Florida’s Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR), a nationally-recognized research institution and resource for policymakers, transportation professionals, the education system, and the public. The CUTR provides the tools, guidance, and promotion necessary to help U.S. employers of any size incorporate commuter benefits into their standard benefits plan.
