March 22nd, 2010
Child-Friendly Center is First of its Kind in Northern Virginia
Falls Church, VA – Children who come to Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children for surgery now have their own dedicated surgery center – the only one of its kind in Northern Virginia. This month the hospital opened a Pediatric Surgery Center, a child-friendly suite of rooms designed to meet the inpatient and outpatient surgical needs of children and adolescents. Dr. Robert Mesrobian, pediatric anesthesiologist, and Dr. Allyson Askew, pediatric surgeon, check out the equipment in the new facility.
The new Center is a licensed, Joint Commission approved facility. A centralized nurses’ station, which allows for open communication among staff, enables nurses to directly see all of the patients. To ensure patient safety, recovery rooms are equipped with pediatric stretchers with side rails, oxygen regulators and airway equipment that is configured according to patient size and weight. The rooms are also larger than standard recovery rooms, to accommodate families.
Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children performs more than 4,000 pediatric surgeries each year. Our pediatric surgeons are trained in the latest techniques and have access to state-of-the-art technology, such as the daVinci robotic surgical system. Surgeons work with a team of anesthesiologists, physicians and nurses who are specially trained in pediatrics.
The most common pediatric surgery performed at the hospital is an appendectomy. Other types of surgeries include:
- Cardiac

Statement on Healthcare Reform
March 22nd, 2010
To Inova Health System, improving the health of the diverse communities we serve is our mission, and that will never change.
We support improvements in a workable system of care that ensures that all Americans have access to high-quality, low-cost medical services and wellness programs. It’s something we actively practice every day.
With the House vote now concluded, we look forward to working closely with our Congressional delegation to better understand how the specific components of the legislation might improve the American system of care.
Ensuring that more Americans have access to quality healthcare is critical at a time when providers continue to see an increased utilization of emergency rooms for basic primary care, most often when patients are at their sickest and the cost of care at its highest.
As the primary safety-net provider in Northern Virginia, Inova – along with our partners in the community – has been and always will be committed to ensuring that care is available to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay.
We believe there are still issues that need to be addressed, such as policies included in the bill around readmissions and the ongoing critical shortage of primary-care physicians and nurses to take care of the influx of new patients. However, as a leader in our field, we stand ready to work with our partners to find solutions to the challenges we face, now – and, more importantly – in the future.
As this reform legislation begins the implementation phase, we will continue to monitor its progress to ensure that hospitals are still able deliver the high-quality, low-cost care that the communities we serve expect from us every day.

Hospital Earns Gold Seal for Knee and Hip Replacement Surgery
Fairfax, VA — Inova Fairfax Hospital’s Joint Replacement Surgery program has earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval™ for healthcare quality. The Joint Commission awarded the hospital “Disease-Specific Care Certification” for Knee and Hip Replacement Surgery.
To earn this distinction, a disease-management program undergoes an extensive, unannounced, on-site evaluation by a team of Joint Commission reviewers every two years.
“This certification means Inova Fairfax Hospital offers exemplary care for knee and hip replacement patients,” says Mark Theiss, MD, Chairman, Orthopedics, Inova Fairfax Hospital. “Our hospital pursued this comprehensive, independent evaluation of the Joint Replacement program to demonstrate the commitment we have to excellence in patient care.”
The program is evaluated against Joint Commission standards through an assessment of a program’s processes, the program’s ability to evaluate and improve care within its own organization, and interviews with patients and staff.
“Earning the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval for Knee and Hip Replacement Surgeries is quite an accomplishment. Inova Fairfax Hospital is continually ranked as one of the best hospitals in the nation in many areas, including cardiac, stroke and gastrointestinal care. This designation is further evidence that our staff and hospital are committed to providing high-quality orthopedic care,” said Reuven Pasternak, CEO, Inova Fairfax Hospital.
Inova Fairfax Hospital joins Inova Fair Oaks Hospital and Inova Mount Vernon Hospital in earning a Joint Commission Gold Seal in orthopedic care.
The Joint Commission launched its “Disease-Specific Care Certification” program in 2002, the first program of its kind in the country to certify disease-management programs. A list of programs certified by the Joint Commission is available at jointcommission.org.
