Fairfax, VA – The Inova Breast Care Institute at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital is one of the first in the D.C. region to earn a three-year accreditation in breast care from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), part of the American College of Surgeons, which sets the standard for how breast cancer patients receive care.
The Inova Breast Care Institute at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital earned accreditation by meeting or exceeding 27 standards of breast cancer care during an on-site review. The Institute was evaluated during an on-site review of its imaging, radiation oncology and medical oncology treatments, surgery, survivorship programs, leadership, research, genetic counseling and breast care navigator program, among other programs.
“Inova Breast Care Institute at Inova Fair Oaks continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing quality breast care to our patients,” said Kirsten Edmiston, MD, Medical Director, Cancer Services, Inova Health System. “The NAPBC designation assures our patients that they’re receiving first-class, state-of-the-art care from a facility that has achieved a superior level of expertise in breast cancer care. The Inova Breast Care Institute is more than just one hospital and one doctor – it’s an entire healthcare system devoted to providing the very best in breast care.”
Only about 100 breast centers nationwide have earned this recognition from NAPBC, which represents organizations dedicated to the improvement of the quality of care for patients with breast care issues.
“We’re honored to receive accreditation from the NAPBC for the Inova Breast Care Institute at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital,” said John Fitzgerald, CEO, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. “It demonstrates that we provide our patients and their families with optimal levels of breast cancer care and resources – including our breast care navigator, a registered nurse who provides education and coordinates care for patients during this vulnerable time in their lives,” he added.
The Inova Breast Care Institute offers a multidisciplinary team of nearly 100 experts across the System, who provide a full range of breast cancer care. With access points at each Inova hospital, Inova provides more breast cancer care than any other healthcare organization in Northern Virginia, treating more than 1,000 women each year.

Inova Juniper Program Receives Grant for Arlington Clinic

CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Donates $250,000 for HIV Care
Arlington, VA – CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield has donated more than $250,000 to the Inova Juniper Program’s Arlington clinic to fund additional services for HIV/AIDS patients. The funds, presented to Inova Dec. 15, will help pay for an additional clinical social worker as well as help provide primary medical-care services, including laboratory tests, diagnostic tests, drug assistance and oral healthcare, to patients receiving services at the Arlington site.
“These much-needed funds will help us provide vital services in a community where the demand for HIV- and AIDS-related care continues to grow,” said Karen Berube, LCSW, CSAC, director, Inova Juniper Program. “We’re grateful to CareFirst and Arlington County leadership for their commitment and ongoing support of our healthcare efforts.”
Inova Juniper Program expects demand for its services to grow, due largely to the closing of Whitman Walker Clinic of Northern Virginia. Inova Juniper Program estimated that 250 clients receiving treatment or care at Whitman Walker would transition their care to Inova, and in fact between February and March 2009, the program saw 143 new patients, compared to the same time period in 2008 when there were only 30 new patients. This increase in demand required additional resources and space to ensure that patients continued to receive high-quality care.
“We think Inova Juniper Program meets a critical need in the Arlington community, and it was important for CareFirst to step up and provide the resources to increase access to HIV and AIDS care for the region,” said Maria Harris Tildon, Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Community Affairs, CareFirst.
Inova Juniper Program provides primary medical care, medical case management, mental health and substance abuse services on an outpatient basis to more than 1,100 persons living with HIV throughout Northern Virginia. To maximize accessibility for clients, services are provided at the main office in Springfield, and five satellite offices throughout the region. The new state-of-the-art simulation lab will enable healthcare professionals to practice a number of skills, from taking vital signs or blood samples to inserting air tubes and performing minimally invasive surgery. Computer-controlled mannequins simulate a range of medical conditions, such as asthma or a heart attack. The mannequins turn blue if there is a lack of oxygen, or they might “complain” of stomach cramping. Instructors can change the symptoms on the mannequins with the push of a button.
This high level of interactivity encourages critical thinking and helps healthcare workers think on their feet. Nurses and students no longer have to wait for real patient situations. With the simulation lab, they can be exposed to various conditions and learn how to treat them, in the safety of the classroom.
