Inova Health System Signs Army-Spouse Employment Partnership

October 15th, 2009

Agreement Will Train Army Spouses for Healthcare Careers

Washington, DC – Inova Health System formally has signed on as a member of the Army Spouse Employment Partnership, which is designed to create jobs for the nation’s estimated 680,000 military spouses, who often face employment challenges due to the relocation demands of service life.

“We’re honored to be a part of this vital partnership that will tap into the expertise and work ethic of the extended military family – specifically, Army spouses,” said Daniel Nichols, Executive Director, Military to Medicine, Inova Health System. “Military spouses are underutilized talent who are the embodiment of what many employers are looking for. We’re looking forward to introducing them to careers in healthcare.”

Other new members of the Army Spouse Employment Partnership include American Health Services, Association of Military Banks of America, Jackson Hewitt Tax Services, the National Military Family Association and Wal-Mart.

The signing ceremony also marked the hiring of 20 military spouses by Inova Health System to serve as part of the Military to Medicine program. Military to Medicine is a national program established with the Department of Defense in October 2008 to build partnerships with other healthcare employers across the country to support career employment of military spouses in healthcare fields.

Employers interested in supporting military-spouse careers by participating in the Military to Medicine national talent exchange should contact Inova Health System’s Military to Medicine program at 703-289-2009.

HealthGrades Study Names Inova Alexandria and Inova Fairfax Hospitals for Quality Care

Falls Church, VA – Inova Alexandria and Inova Fairfax hospitals today received top ratings for cardiac, stroke and gastrointestinal (GI) services by HealthGrades, an independent healthcare-ratings organization. The recognition is based on a HealthGrades study that analyzed patient outcomes throughout the nation’s 5,000 non-federal hospitals.

Inova Alexandria Hospital received a variety of 5-Star ratings and Inova Fairfax Hospital has been ranked the Best in Virginia for certain services for 2010.

  • Ranked among the top 10% in the nation for GI Medical Treatment for two years in a row (2009-2010)

Inova Fairfax Hospital

According to HealthGrades, top-performing hospitals had dramatically lower mortality rates than other hospitals. Both Inova Alexandria and Inova Fairfax hospitals have been designated as Primary Stroke Centers by accrediting agency The Joint Commission, and have highly experienced medical teams that specialize in cardiac services. Through the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute, which provides services at all five Inova hospitals, doctors and surgeons perform 5,000 diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterizations annually and complete more than 1,700 cardiac surgeries each year.

HealthGrades rates hospitals independently based on data that hospitals submit to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The study analyzed patient outcomes in nearly 40 million Medicare hospitalization records from 5,000 hospitals from 2006 to 2008.

The 2010 hospital ratings and more information about the study can be found at www.healthgrades.com.

Seasonal Flu-Vaccine Manufacturing Delay Affects Inova Clinics

October 9th, 2009

As has been reported in the news recently, efforts to quickly manufacture and distribute the H1N1 influenza vaccine have unexpectedly reduced supplies of vaccine for the seasonal flu. The manufacturers that supply Inova Health System with seasonal flu vaccine have recently informed Inova that deliveries of the vaccine will arrive later than anticipated.

As a result, Inova is temporarily postponing our flu shot clinics until we receive more vaccine. Inova will continue to hold certain scheduled clinics to serve our high-risk community, including the weekly family clinics held at Inova facilities, and will continue to vaccinate its employees, to help protect the patients they care for.

This is a temporary measure meant to conserve the seasonal flu vaccine supplies Inova has, and to ensure that our most vulnerable community members – as well as those who care for them – get the seasonal vaccine they need.

We expect to get more seasonal-flu vaccine from the manufacturer, but remain unsure of the exact timing or amount. As soon as we know more, we will reschedule the clinics. In the meantime, for information about clinic availability or location, call 703-750-8818 or visit inova.org/flu.
