Inova Health System Fighting the Flu with a One-Two Punch

Inova Loudoun Hospital Mobile Health Offering October Flu Shot Clinics

Leesburg, VA – Facing a flu season complicated by the prospect of both seasonal flu and the H1N1 (“swine flu”) viruses, Inova Loudoun Hospital Mobile Health Services will offer flu shot clinics again in October.

Inova Health System is one of the largest providers of flu shots in Northern Virginia and has been providing the seasonal flu shots since September – one month earlier than usual. As part of its commitment to keep the community healthy, Inova is offering flu clinics at its hospitals, at employer sites and at many other convenient sites throughout Northern Virginia.

The flu is not just a bad cold. Each year, about 36,000 people in the U.S. die from causes related to seasonal flu, while more than 200,000 people are hospitalized. An annual flu vaccination is safe and convenient, and can be up to 90 percent effective in protecting against this serious illness. Members of the community can protect themselves and their loved ones by getting their vaccines.

Inova Loudoun Hospital Mobile Health Services will offer flu shot clinics throughout the month of October. The clinics are open to the general public. Children aged 4 and above are eligible to receive a flu shot at our community clinics. At our hospital-based clinics on Oct. 5, 7 and 24, infants aged 6 months to adults can be vaccinated.

Each child must be accompanied by a legal guardian or parent. Seniors with a valid Medicare card can also receive a flu shot. The cost for the seasonal flu shot is $25 per person (cash or check accepted). Inova will also offer the H1N1 flu shot in accordance with federal government guidelines once the vaccine becomes available.

The Mobile Health Services schedule for Oct. is listed below. For more information about immunizations and other flu-related services offered by Inova, call 703-750-8800 (or call toll-free 1-877-895-5BUG) or visit www.inova.org/flu.

September 25th, 2009

Alexandria, VA – Tammy Razmic has joined Inova Mount Vernon Hospital as its new Chief Financial Officer, bringing nearly 20 years of experience in healthcare finance, planning and budgeting to her new role.

“Tammy’s financial management experience will be an asset to the CFO position,” said Barbara Doyle, CEO, Inova Mount Vernon Hospital. “She has done an outstanding job during the past three months as interim CFO at the hospital and we’re confident that her experience and commitment to the financial health of Inova Mount Vernon Hospital will be a great benefit.”

Before joining Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, Razmic served as the Assistant Vice President of Finance for Health Services at Inova Health System. Inova Health System Named Among Nation’s Top 250 Most Innovative Companies

September 23rd, 2009

2009 InformationWeek 500 List Highlights Top Technology Innovators

Falls Church, VA – Inova Health System has been named one of America’s top 250 most innovative companies, as part of the 2009 InformationWeek 500, an annual listing of the most innovative users of business technology. Now in its 22nd year, the InformationWeek 500 also tracks the technology, strategies, investments and administrative practices of America’s best-known companies.

“Being named among the top 250 companies in the nation for IT innovation further validates that our investment in technology has been prudent and successful,” said Geoff Brown, SVP, Chief Information Officer, Inova Health System. “We continually strive to implement leading-edge technology that ensures our patients will get the best and safest care possible.”

The InformationWeek 500 rankings spotlight the power of innovation in information technology, rather than focusing solely on an organization’s budget for IT. Among other things, Inova Health System was recognized by InformationWeek for making all its hospital Emergency Departments paperless, deploying computerized physician order entry and utilizing handheld scanners and label printers for accurate labeling, and specimen and vital sign collection, which confirms positive patient identification, eliminates errors due to mislabeling and improves overall patient safety.

Inova Withdraws Route 50 COPN

September 18th, 2009

Focus now on County access/service expansion

Falls Church, VA – In light of the State Health Commissioner’s approval of HCA’s request to move its Certificate of Public Need (COPN) from Broadlands to Route 50, Inova Health System has announced that it will not oppose the Commissioner’s decision. The relocation of HCA’s project to Route 50 is consistent with Inova’s longstanding position that the next hospital built in Loudoun County belongs on Route 50, and Inova wants to remove any impediment to HCA’s plans to build a hospital there. Accordingly, Inova will dismiss its pending lawsuit against HCA and will not appeal the Commissioner’s latest decision.

The only outpatient clinical services currently available on Route 50 are provided at Inova’s Medical Center – Dulles South. Inova will continue to provide those services (which include urgent care, physical medicine, rehabilitation services and diagnostic imaging), but the Commissioner’s decision essentially removes any realistic hope that Inova’s COPN application for a hospital on Route 50 would be approved. Accordingly, Inova will withdraw its pending COPN application.

HCA’s acknowledgment that a Route 50 hospital is in the best interest of Loudoun County residents, given the corridor’s continued growth and its poor access to primary medical care, as well as  the fact that it conforms to the guidance of the Loudoun County Health Care Facilities Plan, is a positive step in this long process.

According to Randy Kelley, CEO of Inova Loudoun Hospital, Inova will continue to invest additional resources to improve and expand healthcare services in all parts of the county. “The county’s Comprehensive Plan calls for more than a hospital on Route 50, as important as that is,” noted Kelley. “It also promotes medical-care centers for access in the west, development of sophisticated, high-level clinical services for residents – for which Inova Loudoun Hospital’s Lansdowne Campus is well positioned – and encourages the revitalization of the Cornwall Campus. Taken together, no Loudoun County resident should be more than 20 minutes from appropriate medical care.”

Based upon the Commissioner’s decision and the expectation that HCA will deliver on its new commitment, Inova will evaluate the appropriate use of its Route 50 property and the Healthplex currently planned to go there, as the need for more services on Route 50 corridor progresses.

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Granted Certificate of Public Need To Provide Radiation Cancer Services

September 15th, 2009

Commonwealth of Virginia Approves Inova’s Relocation of Existing Linear Particle Accelerator Service, Allowing Residents Convenient Access to Complete Cancer Services at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital

Fairfax, VA – Inova Health System and Inova Fair Oaks Hospital are pleased to announce that a Certificate of Public Need has been granted by the Commonwealth of Virginia to provide area residents with improved access to radiation therapy services, made possible through the relocation of an existing Linear Particle Accelerator from Inova Fairfax Hospital to the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital campus.

“This is a perfect illustration of how being part of Inova Health System helps us make a big difference in the health of the community we serve. Relocation of this service will minimize the cost of delivering radiation therapy to our patients while maximizing the benefit to the lives of those who need comprehensive cancer treatments close to where they live. We could not have achieved this without the help of Inova Fairfax Hospital,” said John Fitzgerald, Senior Vice President, Inova Health System, and CEO of Inova Fair Oaks Hospital.

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital currently provides inpatient and outpatient chemotherapy, diagnostic cancer services, surgical treatments for cancer, Brachytherapy, expert oncologists and surgeons trained in the latest minimally invasive surgery techniques, a tumor registry and an ongoing cancer committee. Planning for the new construction required to house the accelerator has already begun.

“The addition of radiation therapy as the anchor to a comprehensive and integrated cancer program meets an important healthcare need in our local community, and provides residents with the convenience of hospital-based cancer services in their own backyard,” stated Robert Reid, MD, Oncology, and President of Inova Fair Oaks Hospital’s Medical Staff.

The hospital recently added a network of services provided through the Inova Breast Care Institute and a full-time RN Breast Care Navigator to round out the offerings of its all-inclusive cancer program. “Radiation Therapy at Inova Fair Oaks Hospital is a win-win proposition. It helps to reach patients in need of cancer services, while fulfilling Inova’s commitment to the communities it serves. Coupled with Inova’s Life with Cancer® program and our dedicated, comprehensive multi-disciplinary teams, we can offer patients and their families world-class care in a compassionate environment,” said Kirsten Edmiston, MD, Medical Director, Cancer Services, Inova Health System.

Other recent additions to the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital campus include a third medical office building and a new Ambulatory Surgery Center with four outpatient operating rooms. A Radiation Imaging Center, Spine Care Institute and Outpatient Physical Therapy services are expected to be added in 2010. To accommodate the increased parking demands from these additions, the hospital recently completed a new green-technology 950-space parking garage that offers free parking to all patients, visitors, physicians and staff, with convenient access to all facilities on the campus.

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital is a 182-bed advanced acute-care community hospital serving the rapidly growing suburbs of Northern Virginia.
