Inova HealthSource Awarded Grant for Tobacco Cessation, Prevention
August 24th, 2009
Program to Target Elementary, Middle School Students
Falls Church, VA – Inova HealthSource’s Tobacco Cessation and Prevention Program has received a one-year grant from the Virginia Tobacco Settlement Foundation (a division of the Virginia Foundation for Healthy Youth) to promote smoking cessation and prevention among elementary- and middle-school students.
The $33,455 grant will help fund after-school programs at 15 Fairfax County elementary and middle schools for the 2009-2010 school year. The goal of the program is to increase awareness of the dangers of tobacco use and to help youth develop the skills to resist peer pressure to experiment with tobacco. The curriculum offered, Life Skills Training (www.lifeskillstraining.com), is an evidence-based, substance-use-prevention program.
“Tobacco use leads to many debilitating yet preventable conditions. Our goal is to provide Fairfax County students with the tools they need to discourage any form of tobacco use,” said Andrea Moore, MPH, CHES, Health Education and Prevention Consultant, Inova HealthSource. “This program is another demonstration of Inova’s commitment to improve the well-being of the communities we serve.”
Inova HealthSource health educators will teach the elementary-school program (eight sessions) and the middle-school program (15 sessions). Sessions, which begin October 15, will last about 45 minutes and include education on a health- or wellness-related topic, and discussion and activities centered around that session’s topic.
The Inova Regional Trauma Center will also collaborate as part of this effort by offering the parental component of the Life Skills Training program. Parents of the children participating will have the opportunity to attend free evening classes that complement the subject matter their children are learning.

Inova Health System Fighting the Flu with a One-Two Punch
August 24th, 2009
Leesburg, VA – Facing a flu season complicated by the prospect of both seasonal flu and the H1N1 (“swine flu”) viruses, and as one of the largest providers of flu shots in Northern Virginia, Inova Health System is prepared to provide seasonal flu shots in September this year – one month earlier than usual. We offer flu clinics at Inova hospitals, at employer sites and at many other convenient clinic sites throughout Northern Virginia. It’s all part of Inova’s commitment to help keep the communities it serves healthy.
The flu is not just a bad cold. Each year, about 36,000 people in the U.S. die from causes related to seasonal flu, while more than 200,000 people are hospitalized. An annual flu vaccination is safe and convenient, and can be up to 90 percent effective in protecting against this serious illness. Members of the community can protect themselves and their loved ones by getting their vaccines.
Inova Loudoun Hospital Mobile Health Services will offer flu shot clinics beginning in September. The clinics are open to the general public. Children aged 4 and above are eligible to receive a flu shot at our community clinics. At our hospital-based clinics on Sept. 27 and 30, infants aged 6 months to adults can be vaccinated.
Each child will need to be accompanied by a legal guardian or parent. Seniors with a valid Medicare card can also receive a flu shot. The cost for the seasonal flu shot is $25 per person (cash or check accepted). Inova also will offer H1N1 flu shots in accordance with federal government guidelines once the vaccine becomes available.
The Mobile Health Services schedule for September is listed below. For more information about immunizations and other flu-related services offered by Inova, call 703-750-8800 (or call 1-877-895-5BUG, toll-free, if a call to the 703 area code is a long-distance call) or visit inova.org/flu.
