Joint Venture Outpatient Surgery Center to Hold Ribbon Cutting, See First Patients in July

Fairfax, VA — Inova Health System and Inova Fair Oaks Hospital are proud to announce completion of a new four-level medical office building (MOB) that includes a 23,209-square-foot Ambulatory Surgery Center, and a new five-level, 950-space parking deck on the hospital campus.

“We are pleased to announce the opening of these new facilities, which have been under construction for the last year. Their completion enables us keep pace with physician demand for office space on our campus while better serving the needs of our area’s growing population,” says John Fitzgerald, Senior Vice President, Inova Health System, and CEO, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital.

The new medical office building – budgeted at $21 million – is the third on the hospital’s campus and houses the new Ambulatory Surgery Center. Local government officials, physicians and representatives from the development and construction companies involved in the building’s creation will join Inova leadership and other guests at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new outpatient surgery center on Thursday, July 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. The address of the new MOB is 3620 Joseph Siewick Dr., Fairfax, VA 22033.

The outpatient surgery center is a joint venture between participating surgeons and Inova, and increases the total number of operating rooms available on the hospital campus to 14. In 2008, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital performed more than 12,000 surgeries in 10 operating rooms.

“We are pleased to join Inova’s efforts to improve access to care in our community. To have this new facility conveniently located on the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital campus is a great benefit, not only for physicians but for our patients as well,” said Richard Brenner, MD, Chair, Department of Surgery, Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. Dr. Brenner, a surgeon with Virginia Surgery Associates, is a joint venture partner in the new Ambulatory Surgical Center.

The recently completed 950-space parking garage offers free parking to all patients, visitors, physicians and staff, with convenient access to all MOBs and the hospital. The $17.1 million-garage is the first Inova Health System facility to use the latest technology in LED lighting, which is both efficient and cost-effective. The garage elevators are also “green,” using one-tenth of the energy of normal elevators. These features, part of Inova’s many environmental efforts around the System, are expected to save approximately $66,000 each year in energy costs. In addition, all materials removed from the project (asphalt, rebar, concrete) were recycled.

Garage security is maintained by 63 active surveillance cameras and 38 call boxes. All cameras and call boxes are monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by the Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Security Operations Center.

Inova Alexandria Hospital Ranked in Top 5% for Women’s Health

Study Shows Hospital Among Best in the Nation Four Years in a Row

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Inova Alexandria Hospital has received the 2009-2010 Women’s Health Excellence Award™ from HealthGrades, an independent healthcare-ratings organization, based on a newly released study detailing patient outcomes. This is the fourth year in a row that Inova Alexandria Hospital has received this distinction.

Hospitals that receive this award rank among the top 5% of all hospitals nationwide when it comes to providing care to women in three areas: women’s medicine, which includes heart attack, congestive heart failure, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and stroke; women’s cardiovascular procedures; and women’s bone and joint health, including knee- and hip-replacement surgeries, spinal surgeries and hip repair.

“The commitment to quality care, which our nurses, physicians and staff deliver to our patients each day, makes this award possible,” said Christine Candio, CEO, Inova Alexandria Hospital. “We’re proud that our hospital continues to rank as one of the best in the nation for clinical excellence.”

According the Sixth Annual HealthGrades Women’s Health in American Hospitals study, released today by HealthGrades, wide gaps in quality care for women persist among hospitals.  The study, which analyzes patient outcomes for the hospital treatment of 16 procedures and diagnoses concerning women’s health and maternity care, finds that top-performing hospitals improved their mortality and morbidity 33% above poorly performing hospitals from 2005 through 2007. Among eligible hospitals, the study found that a total of 18,089 lives could have been saved and 6,849 complications avoided if all eligible hospitals performed at the level of the best-performing hospitals in women’s health.

“As our population ages, more women are affected and hospitalized by chronic diseases like congestive heart failure, and variations in quality do exist between men and women,” said Dr. Rick May, senior physician consultant and a study co-author. “The hospitals that have been identified as Women’s Health Excellence Award recipients are clearly performing at a superior level of quality. Women have a choice in healthcare and should do their homework before choosing a hospital.”

HealthGrades analyzed more than 2.6 million hospitalizations using Medicare data from all 50 states from 2005 through 2007.

Inova Files COPN for Route 50 Hospital

June 29th, 2009

Falls Church, VA — Inova Health System and Inova Loudoun Hospital have filed an application with state health officials for a Certificate of Public Need (COPN) to build an 80-bed hospital on Route 50 in Loudoun County.

The formal application delivers on a promise from Inova and Inova Loudoun Hospital to put the next Loudoun County hospital on Route 50, in alignment with the long-term vision outlined in the county’s Comprehensive Plan for healthcare services.

As a first step toward accelerating delivery of expanded healthcare services, Inova is finalizing the engineering work required to obtain site-plan approval from the county to build a Healthplex on property it owns at the intersection of Route 659 and Route 50 (a Healthplex provides the cornerstone for a hospital and does not require a COPN from the state to provide emergency care, new physician offices or a wide range of outpatient medical services). Zoning approval for the Healthplex and hospital was obtained in February 2008.

“Having a hospital on Route 50 is a critical need for families who don’t have quick access to acute and emergency medical care,” said Randy Kelley, CEO of Inova Loudoun Hospital. “That is one reason why the county’s Comprehensive Plan recognized Route 50 as the location where the next hospital in Loudoun County should be built. Putting a hospital on Route 50 is justified now, based upon the population that is already there, and it ensures that need will not outstrip supply should the population along Route 50 increase in the future.”

Inova’s new hospital on Route 50 will include:

  • A 24-hour, 7-day-a-week emergency department and ambulance receiving station
  • A helipad for trauma-care transport and rapid medical-emergency response
  • 70 medical surgical general hospital beds
  • 10 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) specialty beds
  • 8 operating rooms
  • 1 CT scanner (computer tomographic scanning)
  • 1 MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
  • Ancillary support services

The hospital will follow a two-phase construction plan. Phase One will open all hospital services and 50 beds (40 medical surgical and 10 ICU). Phase Two will add the remaining 30 medical surgical beds.

“If Loudoun County government and the Commonwealth of Virginia endorse this plan and support our COPN and land-use applications, Inova’s hospital could be opened by December 2013,” said Kelley. “That is our goal, but of course the actual timelines are controlled by state and local governmental regulatory processes, and by other healthcare providers that might oppose the project and create delays.”

The county’s Comprehensive Plan for healthcare encourages the development of higher-level, sophisticated medical services and tertiary care, so Loudoun residents do not need to leave the county to access that type of care. In addition, the Comprehensive Plan sets a goal of 20 minutes of drive time to emergency care for all county residents, and calls for a wide dispersal of hospital locations to ensure availability of those services in the event of disaster.

“Building a hospital on Route 50 not only improves access to medical services for families in southern Loudoun, but it enables Inova to accelerate growth of higher-level services at its Lansdowne campus,” said Knox Singleton., President and CEO of Inova Health System. “It also means that the medical services for those in western Loudoun will remain strong and vibrant at Inova’s Cornwall medical campus in Leesburg.”

Inova Alexandria Hospital MRI Reaccredited

June 12th, 2009

Hospital One of First in Area Accredited for Cardiac Imaging

Alexandria, VA — Inova Alexandria Hospital is one of the first in the region to earn accreditation in cardiac imaging during a survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR), which granted the hospital a three-year reaccreditation of its magnetic resonance imaging machines, or MRIs.

ACR awards the accreditation to facilities that have voluntarily committed to following its guidelines and standards, and provide the highest level of safety in radiology. In addition to an on-site review by board-certified physicians, the hospital underwent a rigorous evaluation and review process of its performance.

“Our commitment to the community is to provide high-quality care for our patients,” said Nitin Kumar, MD, chief, radiology, Inova Alexandria Hospital. “This designation by ACR lets our patients know that they are receiving safe, first-class care from a facility that has achieved a superior level of expertise in MR imaging.”

Radiology is an area of medicine used to visualize internal organs, bones and tissues to assist in diagnosing and treating patients. MRIs are becoming increasingly useful in neurological, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and cancer imaging.

ACR serves more than 32,000 diagnostic and interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine and medical physicists who focus on medical imaging and radiation oncology.
