Inova Fairfax Hospital and WRTC to Celebrate Donate Life Month

March 31st, 2009

Organizations Will Honor Transplantation Community with Flag-Raising Ceremony

Falls Church, VA — April is National Donate Life Month, and Washington Regional Transplant Community (WRTC) is partnering with Inova Fairfax Hospital to kick off month-long activities with a ceremony on April 3rd.  The event will be held at 10am outside the hospital’s Gray Entrance (3300 Gallows Road, Falls Church, VA).

In conjunction with Donate Life America’s “Flags Across America” initiative, the event will include the raising of the “Donate Life” flag, which will be flown in front of the main entrance of the hospital throughout April.  The flag’s purpose is to honor the hundreds of thousands of donors and recipients whose lives have been affected by organ, eye and tissue donation.  In attendance will be donor family members, organ and tissue transplant recipients, waiting list patients, doctors and other hospital staff members.

“Inova Fairfax Hospital is a leader in Northern Virginia in organ and tissue donation and transplantation,” said Lori Brigham, President and CEO of WRTC.  “This event will bring all involved in the donation process together not only to honor the courage of those who gave the gift of life through organ and tissue donation – but also to urge everyone to register to become organ and tissue donors themselves.”

People whose lives have been touched by donation or those who wish to show their support for donation are invited to attend the ceremony.

There are more than 101,000 people currently waiting desperately for an organ transplant to save their lives.  By the end of today, 18 of those patients will die waiting for an organ that will never come.  People in the Washington, DC, area can help end the wait by registering to become organ and tissue donors at www.beadonor.org.

Leesburg, VA — Thanks to her volunteer efforts at the Loudoun Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (LNRC), Kathie Hudes presented a grant in the amount of $1,500 to Mabel Costello, Program Manager of the Activities Department of the LNRC on behalf of ExxonMobil Foundation and through its Volunteer Involvement Program.

The Volunteer Involvement Program is funded by ExxonMobil Foundation, the primary philanthropic arm of the ExxonMobil Corporation. Initiated in 1996, the Volunteer Involvement Program seeks to encourage employees, retirees and other eligible participants, including family members, to actively contribute their time and talent to charitable organizations by providing contributions on their behalf. The intent of this program is to encourage volunteerism to worthwhile charitable activities in the community.

Kathie, wife of ExxonMobil employee Tom Hudes, has been a dedicated volunteer for the Activities Department of the LNRC, which strives to increase the quality of life of its residents by offering a variety of daily activities. The residents look forward to these daily events, such as bingo and Wii bowling, to help provide a change of scenery and a chance to socialize. Volunteers build relationships with residents and their families by assisting with the activities or just spending a little one-on-one time chatting and listening.  Many of the residents have some wonderful stories of their past.

LNRC is always looking for people interested in volunteering their time and talent for a few hours a week to help bring a smile to others. Another way to support LNRC is through donations of toys, costume jewelry or puzzle books, which are awarded as prizes for various activities. A small beanbag animal, for example, can bring great joy and huge smiles to many residents.

NCMEC provides assistance with implementing new technology and training of hospital and its security personnel to prevent an infant abduction from occurring. The organization also gives guidance on how to respond when an abduction occurs, working closely with law enforcement during and after an incident.

According to a January 2009 study by the NCMEC, more than 250 infants have been abducted from new parents at their homes or in healthcare facilities since 1983. The majority of these missing infants have been recovered.

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Achieves National Recognition for Nursing Excellence

March 23rd, 2009

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital Honored with Magnet™ Designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center

Fairfax, VA — Inova Fair Oaks Hospital has achieved one of the highest levels of recognition a hospital can achieve for excellence in nursing services. The Magnet Recognition Program® of the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has honored Inova Fair Oaks Hospital by designating it a Magnet™ organization.

“Magnet designation is a tremendous achievement for Inova Fair Oaks Hospital,” said John Fitzgerald, CEO of Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. “It formally recognizes the excellent work our nurses do each day and reflects the commitment of our entire staff to serve as a team, providing the highest-quality care possible for the people of our community.”

The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes healthcare organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing practice and adherence to national standards for the organization and delivery of nursing services. Applicants undergo a rigorous evaluation that includes extensive interviews about and review of nursing services. Research shows there are clear benefits to the communities served by hospitals that are awarded Magnet status:

  • Healthcare consumers have more confidence in the overall quality of a hospital if it has achieved the level of excellence established by the Magnet Recognition Program.
  • Magnet-designated facilities consistently outperform other facilities in recruiting and retaining nurses, resulting in increased stability in patient care and patient satisfaction.
  • Magnet status becomes an attractive force that extends to the entire facility. Recruitment and retention of talented and experienced staff is improved because quality nursing is one of the most important factors in enlisting high-caliber physicians and specialists.

“In addition to providing a proven process for continual improvement, Magnet facilities attract and retain the best and brightest nurses, who in turn provide world-class care, resulting in optimal patient outcomes,” stated Marie M. Dennis, RN, MSN, NEA-BC and Chief Nurse Executive of Inova Fair Oaks Hospital.

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital joins fellow Inova Health System facilities, including Inova Fairfax Hospital/Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children and Inova Loudoun Hospital, in achieving Magnet designation. ANCC is the largest and most prominent nursing credentialing organization in the United States. Inova Fair Oaks Hospital’s Magnet status is valid for four years.
