Inova Fairfax Hospital Among America’s 50 Best Hospitals

February 24th, 2009

Hospital Recognized for Outstanding Clinical Performance

Falls Church, VA — Inova Fairfax Hospital has been named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2009 by HealthGrades, an independent healthcare ratings company. The honor places the hospital in the top 1 percent of all hospitals in the nation for quality outcomes. For the last two years, Inova Fairfax Hospital has been the only hospital in the Washington/Baltimore region to make the list.

According to HealthGrades, patients admitted to a hospital on their “50 Best” list are roughly 27 percent less likely to die and 8 percent less likely to suffer from a major complication than patients admitted to non-recipient hospitals.

“To be recognized by HealthGrades as one of America’s Top 50 Hospitals truly underscores the hard work and dedication of our staff, nurses and physicians,” says Reuven Pasternak, MD, CEO, Inova Fairfax Hospital. “The ongoing commitment of our frontline caregivers and support staff is what enables us to offer world-class care to the diverse communities we serve. Inova’s vision is to become the best healthcare system in the world, and every day at Inova Fairfax Hospital we strive to make that vision a reality.”

To determine America’s 50 Best Hospitals, HealthGrades analyzed more than 110 million Medicare hospitalization records from every hospital in the nation. Facilities must have demonstrated superior clinical outcomes across 26 different procedures and conditions (rather than just one medical specialty) , and must have maintained this superior level of care year after year. To make this year’s list, the winners maintained quality levels among the top 5 percent in the nation for a minimum of six consecutive years.

“The hospitals who receive this distinction have figured out how to hardwire clinical excellence into the fabric of their organizations,” said Dr. Samantha Collier, HealthGrades’ chief medical officer and lead author of the study.

HealthGrades’ America’s 50 Best Hospital designation is based exclusively on clinical outcomes — risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates for patients at every one of the nation’s nearly 5,000 non-federal hospitals. Hospitals cannot opt-in or out of this independent analysis. A full copy of the study is available at www.healthgrades.com.

Inova Files Letter of Intent for Route 50 Hospital

February 16th, 2009

Immediate Construction of Emergency Services and Healthplex Planned

Falls Church, VA — Inova Health System has filed a formal letter of intent with the Commonwealth of Virginia to build an 80-bed hospital on Route 50 in Loudoun County. And, as a first step in expanding Inova’s existing medical services to the Route 50 corridor, Inova will move immediately toward construction of a Healthplex on property it owns at the intersection of Route 659 and Route 50. A Healthplex provides the cornerstone for a full-service hospital and does not require a Certificate of Public Need (COPN) from the state to provide emergency care, new physician offices and a wide range of outpatient medical services.

“The decision by Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) to grow its Reston campus now clears the way for a hospital on Route 50 in alignment with the County’s Comprehensive Plan for healthcare,” said Randy Kelley, CEO of Inova Loudoun Hospital. “Inova’s land on Route 50 has already been zoned to accommodate a hospital. Route 50 is a viable location to support the next Loudoun hospital and Inova is delighted to announce that it will immediately move forward to expand healthcare access and availability for under-served citizens in the southern and western parts of Loudoun County.”

Inova’s Certificate of Public Need application for the new full-service hospital on Route 50 will include a 24-hour, 7-day-a-week Emergency Department; medical-surgical beds; Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds; obstetric beds; up to eight operating rooms; magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); computed tomographic scanning (CT); a helipad for trauma care transport; and related hospital support services.

“This represents Inova’s continuing commitment to the people of Loudoun County and to the County’s Comprehensive Plan for healthcare to improve access to medical services for everyone in the County, especially those who are furthest from care in the southern and western parts of the County,” said Knox Singleton, President and CEO of Inova Health System. “In addition, locating a hospital on Route 50 will allow Inova to accelerate the growth of medical services on Loudoun Hospital’s Lansdowne and Cornwall campuses.”

The County’s Comprehensive Plan for healthcare encourages the development of higher level, sophisticated medical services and tertiary care so Loudoun residents do not need to leave the County to access that type of care. In addition, the Comprehensive Plan sets a goal of 20-minutes drive time to emergency care for all County residents and calls for the wide dispersal of hospital locations to ensure availability of those services in the event of disaster.

“Locating a hospital on Route 50 is the critical element in realizing the higher goals of the County’s Comprehensive Plan for healthcare,” said Kelley. “Inova’s goal is to have the Route 50 Healthplex built and in operation within 18-24 months. The Letter of Intent we filed February 13 for a full-service hospital notifies the state that we will submit our formal application for a Certificate of Public Need (COPN) by the June 1 deadline. The state review process is typically completed within 9 to 12 months.”

Inova Alexandria Hospital First In Region To Offer Embozene Treatment For Tumors

February 9th, 2009

Color-Enhanced Device Will Increase Patient Safety, Improve Physician Accuracy

Alexandria, VA—Inova Alexandria Hospital is one of the first hospitals in the nation to offer a new treatment for uterine fibroids and tumors in other areas of the body that have the potential for heavy blood loss. Embozene™ Color-Advanced Microspheres, blocks the blood supply to these difficult to treat tumors.

This new technology, recently approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), enables interventional radiologists to be more accurate, reduces the possibility of allergic reactions, adding to patient safety.

“This new treatment option enabling interventional radiologists to be more accurate and efficient during these types of procedures,” said Keith Sterling, MD, director, cardiovascular and interventional radiology, Inova Alexandria Hospital. “This product is specifically engineered to resist bacterial infection and reduce inflammation and procedure time, all of which will benefit the patient. We are pleased to be the first in the area to use Embozene, a device that has the potential to be the new leader in the field of tumor embolization.”

Embozene™ was recently approved by the FDA for use in arteriovenous malformations, a circulatory abnormality that affects nearly 300,000 Americans; and hypervascularized tumors, which are tumors with many blood vessels.

The interventional radiologist injects Embozene™ directly into the tumor and can monitor the effectiveness of the treatment more closely because Embozene is highly visible to the physician. Unlike other spheres used in embolization, microspheres retain their shape after passing through a catheter and can remain in the tumor for a longer period of time, delivering a more targeted and accurate number of spheres to the patient. The variety of colors also makes selection easy, efficient, and precise for the physician.

“From the outset, we took a different approach to developing our Embozene Microspheres by asking physicians and medical scientists for the qualities and characteristics that the ideal embolic device should have,” said Thomas A. Gordy, president and chief executive officer, CeloNova BioSciences, Inc.

Interventional radiologists utilize image guidance to perform many minimally invasive procedures including angioplasty, stroke treatment, blood clot removal, and uterine fibroid embolization.

Statement from Randy Kelley, CEO, Inova Loudoun Hospital

February 3rd, 2009

Loudoun County Board of Supervisors BRMC Decision

Leesburg, VA: The citizens of Loudoun County were the clear winners today in the rejection of a hospital in Broadlands by a majority of the Board of Supervisors. This case was never about Inova or HCA. There were only two real issues: HCA’s attempt to upzone an established residential neighborhood, and healthcare policies that ensure equal access to healthcare for every citizen in every part of Loudoun County. A hospital in Broadlands failed to meet the standards in both instances.

We applaud the majority of the Board of Supervisors who were able to cut through the spin and misdirection and make the right decision on healthcare policy. These supervisors did their homework and understood the real issues. These supervisors stood up for preserving the integrity of established residential neighborhoods. These supervisors stood up for the County’s Comprehensive Plan, which seeks to ensure that citizens of Leesburg and Lovettsville and Purcellville and Middleburg — and on Route 50 — get access to the kind of hospital and healthcare that they deserve.

Inova stands ready to deliver on the promise of a hospital on Route 50. We will not oppose HCA in moving to the Route 50 location. If HCA continues to refuse to serve the citizens of Loudoun County as called for in the Comprehensive Plan, then Inova will do so.

Inova Loudoun Hospital Pediatric Emergency Nurses Earn New Certification

February 2nd, 2009

Loudoun Nurses Among the First in the U.S. to Earn Special Designation

Leesburg, VA— Inova Loudoun Hospital is pleased to announce that four Pediatric Emergency Department nurses, Victoria Bamsey, Barbara DeCardona, Gina Harrison and Jacqualyn Sine, have earned the Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN) designation. This is a newly created national certification from the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) and the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB).

The ENA and PNCB worked together to develop an exam for this subspecialty of emergency nursing. Only 200 applications were accepted from nurses across the United States to sit for the first beta examination. The CPEN credential is valid for four years.

Children are often referred to as “small adults,” but they have very unique anatomy, physiology and illnesses that making caring for them a challenge. Depending on the age and developmental stage of each child, a nurse must quickly recognize and tailor their care accordingly. The pediatric nurse must also include and provide extra support for their caregivers.

This recent accomplishment by the nurses who work in the hospital’s Pediatric Emergency Department exemplifies their dedication and commitment to providing excellent care to their pediatric patients. Inova Loudoun Hospital has a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department and sees more than 14,000 patients each year.

Inova Loudoun Hospital, serving Loudoun County for nearly 100 years, is part of the Inova Health System; a not-for-profit health care system based in Northern Virginia that consists of hospitals and other health services, including emergency and urgent care centers, home care, nursing homes, mental health and blood donor services, and wellness classes.
