Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children’s “Change for Children” Campaign Collects More Than $4,000

Campaign Raised Funds for Entertainment for Pediatric Patients

Falls Church, VA— From March through mid-June, Inova Fairfax Hospital for Children encouraged people to crack open their piggy banks and check under their couch cushions for spare change. Individuals or groups collected pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters that resulted in a total of more than $4,000.

The donations collected will go to purchase toys and other entertainment to help our youngest patients feel better during their hospital stay. The top fundraising groups were Girl Scout Troop 3401 with $1,800 and Stone Hill Middle School with $1,012.

Group to Review Submissions for Malcolm Baldridge Award

Alexandria, VA – The National Institute of Standards and Technology recently appointed Rodica Sandor Scoma, clinical administrative director, Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, to the 2008 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award.

The Board of Examiners, a group of 500 of the nation’s leading experts, judge applications in the arenas of manufacturing, small business, education, healthcare and non-profit.

“This is an honor to review and evaluate organizations that have a commitment to quality care and customer satisfaction,” said Scoma. “The Baldridge Quality Award is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that any organization in the U.S. can receive.”

Applicants are judged on their leadership, strategic planning, and a variety of other fields. The recommendations of the examiners are then submitted to the Secretary of Commerce for selection of a final award recipient. The President of the United States presents the award during a ceremony.

Congress established the Baldridge award in 1987 to recognize U.S. organizations for their achievements and to raise awareness about the importance of quality and excellence in a competitive market.

Survey Finds Hospitals with IT Commitment Have Better Outcomes

Falls Church, VA– Inova Health System has again been named one of the nation’s 100 Most Wired hospitals and health systems, according to the results of the 2008 Most Wired Survey and Benchmarking Study.

According to the new study, the 100 Most Wired hospitals show better outcomes in patient satisfaction, risk-adjusted mortality rates and other key quality measures through the use of information technology (IT).  Marking its 10th year, the Most Wired Survey and Benchmarking Study continues to be seen as a leader in the field in analyzing and benchmarking healthcare IT.

The Most Wired Survey is conducted annually by Hospitals & Health Networks magazine, the journal of the American Hospital Association, which uses the results to name the 100 Most Wired hospitals and health systems. It focuses on how the nation’s hospitals use information technologies for quality, customer service, public health and safety, business processes and workforce issues.  Inova Health System has been a recipient of this recognition five out of the last 10 years, reflecting the organization’s sustained culture of innovation and technology solutions designed to improve patient care.

Inova Alexandria Hospital Names Dr. John Audett Chief Medical Officer

Physician Brings More Than Two Decades of Experience To New Role

Alexandria, VA— Inova Alexandria Hospital has named John Audett, MD, its new chief medical officer. As chief medical officer, Dr. Audett will be responsible for the oversight of the Medical Affairs Office and its functions, as well as physician relations, and patient quality and safety.

Dr. Audett has more than 20 years of experience in healthcare. He served as senior vice president and vice president of medical affairs at Kent Hospital in Warwick, Rhode Island. While in that role, Audett led the medical staff and plotted the strategic direction to help ensure quality care and clinical programs at the hospital. He also implemented a Rapid Response Team that helped reduce the number of critical outcomes.

Audett was an integral part of the medical staff and executive leadership often serving as a liaison for the CEO between the hospital and Warwick community. Prior to joining Kent Hospital, he owned an internal medicine private practice and held the position of general medical officer for the United States Health Service.

“Dr. Audett has a proven track record of achievement and we’re very excited that he will join us in this new position,” said Christine Candio, CEO, Inova Alexandria Hospital. “We are confident that his experience and commitment to quality healthcare will continue to enhance our level of service to the community, quality care and the strategic direction of the hospital.”

Dr. Audett graduated from and trained at the University of St. Louis School of Medicine. He earned a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Rhode Island and completed studies at the American College of Physician Executives.
